I don't remember seeing anyone mention it so my apologies if someone had. The Texans put in a waiver claim when the Bucs waived him but a rule prevented them from doing so.

He was waived on Aug. 30 and claimed by Greg Schiano‘s Buccaneers on Sept. 1. He only lasted nine days in Tampa Bay before getting waived again. The Texans tried to re-claim him, but NFL rules forbid them from doing so. The Patriots benefitted from the obscure rule (a team can’t claim a player they waived for two years unless he stays on another NFL roster for at least four weeks), claimed Jones and brought him on the 53-man roster.

Was listening to Matt Chatham the other day on NFL rules and he said that all rules should be listed on both sides of a 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper...

Obscurity seems to be the rule... you need a staff of lawyers to understand all of them.

Its a Billion dollar business, not a pool hall.

looked at some chris jones highlights.

2:10 mark you will see him showing off his beastly barrel roll sack technique. The same we saw on Geno.

Like I said when we first got him, I know it was against lesser competition, but whenever a DT gets 12.5 sacks in a season, the guy has to have talent. I never knew he'd progress so fast in the NFL 4.5 sacks in his first 5 games. Obviously BB had his eye on him having claimed him twice, we were lucky Tampa has so many D- lineman and cut him.

I had to come back to this post to give a BINGO! The rules posted on both sides of a paper, seriously? Hey wait, we don't have to re-read the rules, they will be repeated on the other side!

Suffer in your JJ Watt Houston.

Oh, who I am kidding. Watt is awesome.

Well, I'd say that worked out well for the Patriots, all things considered.

He reminds me of Chris Zorich from the Bears back in the day .. (some of y'all might be too young to remember him -_-)

He is awesome; you should show your appreciation for him and send him a cigar and book of matches.

While I am struggling to see the purpose of that rule, at the same time I am glad that it worked out that the Patriots were able to claim him.

On a side note, that was not the first time that the Patriots attempted to get Jones. When Houston first let him go the Pats put in a waiver claim, but were denied because Tampa Bay had a higher waiver priority.

I was thinking about that earlier today. I think the reason for it is to prevent a "backdoor" loan in-season. That said, the odds of it are minuscule.

I think a better version would simply be that the normal waiver rule remains in force, except that a team that has already waived a player loses precedence to any team that has never waived that player. [As an example: if the JEST were to waive Sudfeld tomorrow, the Pats could only claim him if no other team put in a waiver claim, regardless of record.]
