Patriots vs Bengals Post-Game Thread

I shamefully admit I was paying more attention than I'd like to that TD streak. Now that it's over, I'm glad. It's just a stat that will eventually be broken, and one less thing I have to worry about.

You almost wonder if the staff was thinking about it too, with two passes inside the two yard line.

This was a VERY painful game to watch. Hard to see Belichick and Kraft putting this kind of offense on the field for this team. Dobson....is a bust. The OL is STILL a inconsistent mess. Thompkins has potential...but is a long way from being a top threat WR....primarily because he bobbles/can't hang onto the ball. Blount is a decent back...but is north south and is very predictable. Bolden continues to shoot this team in the foot...WE HAVE NO FRIGGIN TE UNLESS Gronk comes back....no offensive blocking help....no offensive weapon. I think Bb and kraft...have to know that they tanked (so far) on the offense this year and yhat McD ain't going to get it done here.....again
Lastly Amendola.....the whole decision by BB ranks up there with some of the worst decisions in BB era. ..Amendola will NEVER STAY healthy all year..... he will never be reliable

Brady is starting to lose a step but that is to be expected when you get into your late 30's. Its not helping that BB decided to surround Brady with such a piss poor receiving core. This is worse than the 2006 receiving core.

No coincidence that Manning at age 37 is putting up ridiculous numbers because Elway surrounded Manning with great receivers. Its anybody's guess why BB just refuses to give Brady the same help at his age.

Such a great post. Hoody lets Welker go, TB's security blanket, and after losing AH BB did nothing to replace him. Someone needs to tell Bill that yes, you CAN have to many 5'9 185 receivers, who cant jump, run, or make people miss. Brady has such small windows to throw in, especially on deep balls, that its amazing he does what he does.

And no, a UDFA Thompkins doesn't count as trying to get Brady weapons. The book on Dobson was that he is inconsistent hands and wasn't the brightest, and look what we have

I'm not sure Bolden is better than anyone. Can't catch the ball and can't get to the edge. Replacement level performance today (which is what he really is).

edit: He's OK as a 4th string RB but I really don't see him being any better than that personally.

I had high hopes for him after a few surprising performances, but it's becoming more apparent that those games are the exception and not the rule with him. You can count on him to have few mental lapses each game too. The dropped screen is an example of that, and he had a lot of green grass in front of him.

Getting the skill players back on O won't matter much if the OL continues to dish up putrid performances as such. They've been terribly disappointing this season, most unlike them.

I absolutely agree with you. The worst part for me today was the way they manhandled the offensive line, especially Wendell and Connolly. It's been a trend for a long time. They need to fix it and fix it soon. When they face good defensive fronts this line struggles. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT THEY NEED TO FIX.

Anyone see my man Jake (not Josh) Bequette on the Bengals' goal line TD?

His new nickname is "Whipped Cream".

The loss hurts though. Huge props to the Bengal's D, but those rookies need to get on Brady's page fast. At face value it looked like there were a couple plays where Dobson was wide open and Brady threw nowhere near him, indicating it would be on Brady. But I don't know how the Patriots offensive system works; as someone pointed out in the gameday thread, it appears Tom has zero flexibility on his routes (except for scrambling situations), which makes sense (that's just asking for miscommunication). It looks like Dobson's going to have to learn, at least on the initial route, to run it correctly.

Not to put it all on him though, Brady was off on a TON of throws today.

We'll be fine, we're 4-1 and 2-0 in our division.

People say they know we'll have growing pains, but when they see it, they bail out and don't act like it.

Plenty of teams would love to be in our position, rebuilding, with these injuries and be 4-1.

So we won't get the top seed. That makes us an underdog, and if the past decade has been anything to go bye, that makes us the favorites over the top seeds to win it all.

^ This

Or the QB. Hence my post above.

How many passes have receivers caught in stride this season? Passing game is still a big work in progress.

Just want to put in a good word for Chris Jones who I thought looked better than Vellano. Although he didn't cause it, he did some really good work on the Dalton int and had two sacks (I think)...(and one of them he wasn't blocked)...but even so..

Contrary to those who will beat me up for this comment, I think they were thinking of it. Don't forget that this is the same team that ran the same go-route to Moss consecutively to get him the TD record in 2007. This is the same team that threw a 17-yarder (I believe) to Gronkowski in a game they firmly had control of to get him the record for most receptions by a rookie TE a few years ago as well. I believe they do things like that to reward the players' hard work and because they know that it's important to the players.

People are going to say that's stupid because they simply want to win and blah blah blah, but I firmly believe that coaches and players are aware of these things and go after them . . . unless you're the Colts (think hard).

Yeah, it was too obvious that Brady was expecting Dobson to cut to the outside and not the inside. He would have been wide open either way. I wish they could have been on the same page. If that game went into overtime, I would have loved the Pats' chances. They seemed to be getting into a little bit more of a groove right before the downpours.

No, he wouldn't have been wide open. You clearly didn't see the Safety over the top who broke to the outside once Dobson had decided on the POST route. Had Dobson run the Corner, any sort of catch would have been tough..

You can't expect your #4 DE to own the interior on a goal line stand. That's where they missed Wilfork and Kelly.

Nice blatant lies on your part. Dobson has caught more passes than he's dropped. Dobson has run plenty of the correct routes. It's BS on your part to say otherwise.

Edelman is better than an average wide out. You saying otherwise doesn't make it true..

So its OK if Dopson is always dropping passes because he has more catches than drops? Lets not forget the fumble either that he luckily recovered today.

It's OK if Dobson is constantly running the wrong route because more times than not he runs the correct one?

Not sure if you're related to Dobson but he has been awful this year. For a NFL wide receiver he drops too many passes and runs the wrong route too many times.

Yeah.... that whole Welker + Edelman thing last year really limited the offense.

Come on, now.

Outside of the injuries, Dobson and Thompkins are killing the team with their play.

Dobson was wide open on the final drive, but brady choose to dump the ball off.

With all the talk about drops, probably worth noting that was an amazing catch. If Brady puts the on the money, it's an easy TD. Amendola had stop his momentum and catch a ball way behind him, and then gather himself. Credit the DB for getting the tag just in the nick of time. Huge play in the game. But it was a really great catch.

That one was on Brady. A good pass and its an easy 6. The next 2 plays point to coaches. Blount is an awful short yardage back. SOlder was pure desperation. Another play nobody is talking about is Talib (great game) should have dragged his feet in the end zone--he had no idea where he was. Would have taken 3 points off the board and changed the game. None of that changes the fact that offense stunk out the joint today. On a day the defense took a big step up without Vince, hte offense took a big step backwards.

Guys I still think Dobson needs more snaps. I think he can be our deep threat wr. He obviously can get open, if he gets on the same page as Tom, I say he can be great. To me Dobson looks like he has potential, great potential. But Boyce I think has some serious speed for going deep.

Pretty much the dumbest thing I've read on this board so far today.

You must've missed "season is over" and "Brady is done", or my personal favorite "BB can't coach."

I feel like some posters join just so they can relish in the losses.

My feeling is that the Pats win this with Ridley, Vereen and Gronk on the field to force the Bengals to defend superior threats. That changes the blitz and gap coverages. Let's hope Ridley and Gronk are back next week.

I am very encouraged by the defense. This is becoming a real tough, physical, quick to the ball defense. Let's hope Kelly can stay in middle of the line.
