Rumor: VJax to Patriots??? - UPDATE Not Accurate (mod edit)

One of my fraternity brothers live in Tampa. He said he was listening to the Radio and they said that Patriots are trying to trade for Vincent Jackson. Anyone else hear this? Any truth to this? If true, how do you feel about Vjax to the Patriots?

Iam sure even if it were to be considered, the salary, the picks and the player(how he checked out of the pats game) will be a factor . Would rather have BB fleece schiano for a DT or two.

And, BTW, the answer is probably no; while he'd be a perfect one-year rental (he's earning less than $1M in weekly paychecks), (A) he has >$10M in salary next year, and (B) the Bucs would eat a lot of dead money to trade him.

I think the cost in picks would be too high.

Looks like a false alarm, but man, what a mess down there in Tampa. Have you seen the crap with Josh Freeman? One week he's your starting QB and the next he's a parriah. Making him sit in a box during the game and telling him not to come to meetings? Outing his drug program status? One of, or both of, he and Schiano are absolute jerks, with both of them hurting the team's and the player's chances of moving the player for anything decent.

Too bad we couldn't get VJax, but as someone else said, it seems we could use more help on the D-line than at receiver right now.

Just to clarify – Vincent Jackson is NOT on the trading block. Merely saying if things continue to go down hill, veterans COULD be moved.

I don't think the rumor is true but FWIW I remember a guy on this board a cou[ple years ago claiming to have inside info saying that the Pats were very high on VJAX.

I can't beleive I'm saying this but if the Pats were to make an in-season move I would prefer that it was for a D-Lineman, or DB. If they're going to get bye the Broncos they'll need to stop Manning and all his weapons.

Not going to happen. The Bucs aren't trading him. At least not for anything less than a king's ransom. He is their best player on offense and they just restructured his deal and will give them a huge amount of dead cap space.

The Tampa Bay ownership is known for placing a higher priority on profits than on winning. Considering that they just paid Jackson a $12 million signing bonus a year ago, I doubt that they are wanting to write that investment off so quickly. Though VJax' salary does shoot up next year ($10 mil in 2014; $9.7 in 2015; $9.7 in 2016), owners are still obligated to hit 89% of the salary cap from 2013-2016. The NFL is not like baseball where salary dumps are cut and dried propositions for a team that is out of contention.




On a side note, one of the Tampa area sports talk radio stations had been running a giveaway promotion based on predicting which game Josh Freeman would be benched. Now that that has ended, the new one is for people to call in with their prediction on when Schiano will be fired. Both include a fishing trip where the winner gets to give that particular person a 'burial at sea': throwing a Freeman jersey off the boat into the Gulf of Mexico, or in Schiano's case doing the same with a Bucs polo shirt and visor.

FWIW, that 89% is a collective figure, not a year-by-year one.
