How ESPN creates a story.

OT: How ESPN creates a story.

Well according to jaws kaep is the future goat.

They've been doing this for years. Skip Bayless/FirstTake started the whole Tebow craze.

I love the new Fox Sports 1....screw ESPN and the lebron show. They NEVER show hockey and they create non existence stories like this

Even though Florio is a hack of epic proportions, I favor NBC Sports and PFT over all of those media outlets. ESPN's terrible and its content has eroded to the point of non-existence for years now.

Florio's "journalism" has really deteriorated in quality over the years. PFT used to be a must read... now it's no different than the National Enquirer in the way it baits readers.

Sure, but the timeline is a really great way to see just how shameless they are about it.

This is no different from what the NYT or WaPo does, except they often collaborate with the majority of like minded media.

That was an interesting walk down memory lane. It's a little depressing to how many of us, myself included, expected the ombudsman to really take a strong stance on their coverage of that story.

I had forgotten some of the other details from that time, like Easterbrook's flip-flop ("Taping signals it no big deal. What? There's no walkthrough tape? Lifetime ban for stealing signals!") and Carter and Schlereth acting like morons (more than usual).

It's how most of them are. The only reason I watch any of it, is to get a scoop on the Patriots or see which "analyst" will trash the Patriots, so I can trash the network and their stupidity and defend the Patriots, to my fellow co-workers (who for some, hates the Patriots), friends (who hates the Patriots) and family (who are seemingly ok with the Patriots)

So you are a troll.

I was debating it when I read your post about the Patriots needing to get tough and just didn't know but this confirms it.

The World Wide Leader does this constantly; Deadspin's timeline is just one of many examples. Just a few days ago we went through an identical process: it all started when Adam Schefter tweets that Gronk will most likely not be ready to play in week one.

There was absolutely no new news, and this was something that 98% of everyone had figured to be the case for a very long time now. After that it becomes 'breaking news' in bold red background on the bottom of the television screen, a lead story on SportsCenter, followed up by more analysis on all of their other shows.

What happens then is that every single sports site feels compelled to re-report this information, possibly with a small additional take of their own. The reason they all do this is because if they don't then they fear it will appear as if they dropped the ball and don't know what's going on - and if that happens then their customer base (readers/viewers/listeners) will turn elsewhere for their sports information, and that will result in a loss of ad revenue and profits.

It's a crazy situation that exemplifies the power that ESPN has. There was absolutely no new information - and yet it became headlines for any football-related news source on the web, radio or television. As an added bonus TWWL in effect had hundreds of organizations nationwide giving them free publicity, sending yet more readers/viewers/listeners to them when all those other regional web sites and local radio stations carried the story - essentially free advertising for them.

As a consumer I find it pitiful the way the process works - but from a business standpoint I do have to tip my hat to them.
