He clearly hasn't learned how to play the position right -- not the mental aspect, nor the mechanics. But he's getting there on the mechanics. But for every step forward on his mechanics, there's two steps back on the mental aspect. He's clearly listening to voices in his head. And you have to play this position with rhythm and confidence.

Anyway, the purposes he serves are

(1) a backup quarterback, which you have to have. Mallet will not be after another year probably. Tebow gives them the ability to fulfill that requirement at league minimum salary, and free up dollars for other players. And have the luxury to trade Mallet.

(2) A project. He's big and physically talented. He's gotten by on physical ability and instincts, and had a lot of success doing it. He could be a good player if he can be taught the game the right way. So he could have an upside -- perhaps a multiyear, long term backup to Brady, on the theory that Brady plays 6 more years and no one else wants to sit behind him that long. And that leads into the final value.

(3) Utility player -- punt protector, 2 point conversion specialist, and general athlete that can do some things for you. This includes scout team quarterback, etc. To the extent you have to carry a backup anyway, it would be nice to get something else out of the position. Because I don't think there is a backup anywhere that can truly come in for Tom Brady without the season being ruined. Cassell 2 is probably not going to happen.

So, those are 3 decent reasons. Tebow just has to be above some minimum level of decency as a player to make it work -- and it remains to be seen if he can get there in this type of offense or at all.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

This thread will go well.

Of course he shouldn't be cut. We have until late August until that decision needs to be made.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

until I get a better picture on who would be cut in order to keep him, i see no reason to cut tebow.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

no rush to get rid of him, but I don't see him contributing at QB.......

I'm more worried about the defense

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

Cut him. Mallett looked shaky. Time to get some real competition behind him.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

Cut him after the last pre-season game so he can continue to take the hits before the regular season begins. A third string cannon fodder QB is mandatory in the pre-season.

he's a better pet than Rikki Landers or whatever her name was.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

Tebow = National ratings = more national games and less bars for me. Huge Win!

Real answer:

They should have another vet that can work with Mallett on the sidelines in practice, and help his game. God knows he needs it.

Tblow sucks. They should not have 3 QBs though.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

If the whole plan is keep him at QB then cut him. If we have a bigger plan for him such as a possible tight end keep him.

I more or less agree, but while he's playing QB he's not helping the young receivers develop. The Pats should've signed a rookie as third QB in camp -- someone who can actually throw.

Yeah, I am sure he would make a great tight end. He cant even play the position he has been playing his whole life reasonably well.

Plus we have an extremely deep tight end group - log jam.

What a stupid post. This Teblow to TE thing is comical.

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

Cut, cut, cut.

That "performance" last night was embarrassing to watch, not seen a QB3 play that badly since Zac Robinson.

His roster spot when it comes to the final 53 will be much better used on a RB,TE or DT instead - y'know, so it can be someone who will actually contribute.

Whilst I envision Tebow as a FB and not a TE, your post makes no sense. Our logjam at TE features two that combined for a whopping nine receptions last year, an undrafted rookie and another coming of a serious injury. As to your first point, how is that relevant? What are the skills necessary to play QB that a TE needs as well?

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

I don't think Tebow adds much to the Patriots and his passing is shock to my senses. I'd cut him.

Still there were QBs in the league that succeeded, with inability to throw the forward pass with any facile ability.

I remember Joe Kapp's leaping shot putt passes; and he got his teams to the Grey Cup and to a Superbowl appearance.

I remember, Billy Kilmer having to heave schoolyard wounded-duck passes to his receivers, while Sonny Jurgenson sat on the bench. Billy managed to get his teams to the Playoffs under George Allen too.

I know you won't agree with this but to tack onto your point, I think Tebow running a "Tebow" package gives us a better chance of winning than Mallett running a "Brady" package. Tebow's problem is dropping into the pocket (and he looks terrible there) but when he was on the move and when he was running the ball, the offense was gaining yards.

So Fells and Hoo are no good because of your criteria? Who were they playing behind? How many snaps? How was their blocking? How have they done in camp so far? We have 5 legit TEs on the roster now with Suds looking like a sure fire keeper. How many do you think we can keep? Who do you cut and why? Teblow? Please. He couldnt carry any of our TEs jock.

As for your last question Ummmm, It may be the stupidest question I have ever seen on this forum in the 6 years I have been reading here. And I have seen some stupid stuff.

My point exactly. We need a lot more help at TE then we do QB. My point was mainly that we need to use Tebow's athleticism and not his throwing arm. Whether or not that's FB, TE, etc...

Considering the logical inconsistencies in your own post, you must have seen a lot of stupid writing - like every time you re-read your own stuff

Feel free to point them out Tebow lover

Re: Should Tebow be cut?

Should we keep Tebow or cut him?

My take is that he should be cut. When the Patriots have to put in a whole new offense just for Tebow who is not a starter and cant run the Patriots offense, its time for him to go. He has not improved since his rookie year. He is not an NFL QB, he is a college QB and he will not succeed as QB in the NFL.

If you're asking in terms of right now I would answer no, I would wait until final cuts because we need a 3rd arm in camp.
