Taking Risks On Suspended/Jailed Players

so far so good

We've had a backup we've never used for a 3rd rounder. What a huge success!

Yes. That is exactly my point. There are risks and we take the good with the bad.

It is a huge success, we have developed a very capable and talented backup behind Brady for only a 3rd rounder. They may even be able to trade him for a 2nd rounder at some point in the future and get some return back on it, but he is a solid backup and fortunately we haven't needed him but if something happened to Brady, its nice to know that Mallet is there behind him.

As others have stated, I have no problem with weed, but a violent history or sexual assaults or beating your wife are far from ordinary. Smacking a cop off duty in a club is more of an "ooops" than anything else, we've all been in fights it's unfortunate that it was a cop. I have good friends who have made stupid mistakes while they were growing up, I find most of these mistakes forgivable.

We could have kept Hoyer and the 3rd which would be worth a 2014 1st. Sure, we might get "some" return.

How much should Belichick consider these character issues of its players in its consideration of building a 53 man roster.

Even if Bolden and Cunningham are clean now, it seems that there is a future risk of suspension (greater than other players). Might Belichick simply choose to move on to Blount and Benard?

With regard to Dennard, Belichick already has him playing with the second team. Surely, we need to prepare for time without him.

MY BOTTOM LINE

If Blount and Benard are close, I would say goodbye to Bolden and Cunningham. Keeping marginal players with risks isn't worth a roster spot.

Dennard was a known risk from the beginning. Given that he is a starting quality player, the pats have reasonably announced that he will stay with the team. He is clearly worth keeping, even if only plays a few games.

I'm not sure you could be competitive if you eliminated any player that has had an incident in their lives. Look at these players who all for one reason or another seem to attract criticism for their on or off the field antics.

Gronkowski
Talib
Spikes
Dennard
Cunningham
Bolden
Kelly
Thompkins
Buchanan
Fortson
Edelman
Harrison

Ryan Mallett...

Short of the history that equates to an excessive distraction for the team with the public/media, it is a risk/reward problem. If you make that player a centerpiece of the offense or defense, and he will likely be gone next week, then probably a bad decision. Otherwise, use the player appropriately with a "next man up" approach in the event there are issues.

In my opinion, even if Dennard gets the boot at some point, his performance last year made the decision to draft him a success. The NFL is not about long-term affiliations anymore, given health and salary issues, so hope this risks pay off in the near future. If not, in a case like Dennard, what have the Pats really lost with that gamble?

Spot on. Now that those having vapors over The Prisoner and The Donut Eater Hater have had time to calm down, it's clear that mid to late rounds e.g. the 7th here is just the right place to take a flier on talented players with "issues"
