Rumor: Ryan Mallet to Browns for 6th overall pick

Even if the Browns are the only other team that wants him, they still have to compete with what the Pats are willing to part with, BB may very well be perfectly fine with keeping Mallet at all costs, the Pats reportedly turned down a first round pick for him.

When did this happen?

Did you really just quote the same Clown who started this whole "Mallett for at least the #6 Pick" sewage in the first place??? Yes!! Yes, you DID!!!

FWIW, though, it's not out of the realm of possibility. IIRC, Reiss reported that someone offered a pick for Myron Pryor during his first TC.

But I agree that the source is not, shall we say, 100% reputable.

Absolutely.

~ Somebody offered a 3rd Day Pick for Pryor before he'd ever played a Down.

~ Likewise, somebody offered Tampa a Pick for My Super Binkie, UFA Michael Smith, last year.

But #6 and then some???

49ers just traded benchwarmer Alex Smith to the Chiefs for TWO second round picks! #34 pick in this year's draft and another conditional second round pick. Not only that they have to pay Smith 8.5m per year in salaries.

49ers and Chiefs have Alex Smith trade in place, for two 2nd rounders? - CBSSports.com

The price has been set. Umm yeah, you guys have no idea about this year's QB market if you think Mallet should only fetch a 4th in return. Maybe BB will still keep him because we have no other backup but clearly teams are paying high value for a new QB to take over!

We have been hearing about Lombardi possibly trading for Mallett since Janaury 18th. Would the Pats be interested in the deal. Absolutely and they could sign Cassell as a low priced backup if needed. This would be an offer too good to turn down. Realistically thinking...the highest draft pick Lombardi would consider offering is a 2nd round for two reasons. The poor quality of quarterbacks in this years draft and Malllett is still young.

Browns do not have a second

How about getting Clevelands third round pick and swap first round picks?

I wonder if Cleveland could swap firsts and get a 2nd out of someone wanting to move up and draft Geno Smith. We could send them Mallett for that 2nd.

However we achieve it, we need as many second and third round picks as we can get this year (except for trading future picks which I'm not a fan of).

Trade back from first and pick up a third.
Trade Mallet for a swap of seconds plus a third.

We end up with two high to medium seconds and three thirds. Can we add anymore?

Some other options could be tagging and trading Vollmer and potentially looking at moving Spikes if we feel he isn't going to be here long term. I'm not necessarily saying I would do these (although if the price were right I wouldn't turn it down) but I think these could be genuine options to look at.

Problem is if we trade Spikes we have a hole to replace. He brings a unique skill set to the field.

I don't think Spikes is going to resign here and there's enough depth at ILB to cover his repsonsibilites. Now is the time to flip him for future value as I don't see franchising him after next season. Tagging and flipping Vollmer has a lot of merit as well. I'm not sure if you can get a first rounder but maybe a 2nd this year and another next.

You mean being the worst in the league at coverage?

Spikes is always going to be a liability against the good passing teams we'll face in the playoffs, I'd rather trade him, get some value, and restock the position.

You should change you name to Negative Nancy... He isn't as big a liability as people claim and he is great against the run and forcing fumbles..

Child please, Spikes couldn't cover my grandmother. He actually is great against the run, which works fine as log as teams are going accommodate us by not passing when he's on the field.

Spikes is a old style middle linebacker. His job is to be an enforcer and some of the best MLBackers in the game including Singeltary, Lewis, Lambert, Butkus weren't great at coverage either. Spikes is very aggressive and terrific at stopping the run and creating turnovers. The Pats don't need a pretty boy at LB they need a hard hitting enforcer.

Yep, he's perfectly suited to how the game was played 30yrs ago.

Spikes you would think would be the perfect LB to play against this new option read that has come into vogue. Spikes I thought played real well vs the Seahawks who run the option read and he shot the gap twice and he had two highlight real tackles for loss.

Daniel Jeremiah just said on Path To The Draft that he'd have Mallett as the 2nd ranked QB in this draft behind Geno Smith.

I say a Cleveland trade back to get a 2nd. Then, flip it to us for Mallett. If they did with Rams, to move from 6 to 20. Likely to get nearly as good a player there as 6.
