Rumor: Ryan Mallet to Browns for 6th overall pick

20. Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina (NFL DraftScout #17)
25. Alec Ogletree, OLB, Georgia (NFL DraftScout #44)
70. Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech (NFL DraftScout #71)
114. Tharold Simon, DB, LSU (NFL DraftScout #110)
135. Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio St. (NFL DraftScout #178)

While I like Cooper 20 is pretty high for a guard especially when that position hasn't been an area of weakness.

I like Ogletree as well but with Mayo, Spikes, Hightower, Nincovich and Fletcher returning where are you looking to play him? I know he's a converted safety and you really liked David for the nickle backer slot but the first round is a little high for a specialty position which isn't an elite pass rusher.

Patton would be a steal at 70.

Not a fan of Simon. He's not physical enough and isn't good in run support.

This is the most ideal scenario for trading Mallett to Cleveland. Swap first round picks in 2013 and New England includes Mallett. From this, New England can trade down from the sixth selection to acquire both first round picks from St. Louis or acquire a first round pick this year and that team's first round pick in 2014. The question is, which team has a player in mind that would go as high as the sixth selection that would be willing to give back two first round picks to New England. Perhaps, a team that's high on a certain defensive end or defensive tackle.

You can always re-sign free agent Brian Hoyer or sign a different free agent like Matt Moore or Chase Daniel or draft a backup quarterback.

With the market in mind, it is difficult to envision the Browns needing to offer a package including the sixth overall selection to acquire Mallett. A more realistic trade would be to send the sixth pick to New England in exchange for their first-round selection (29-32 depending on the playoff results) and Mallett.

Don't forget that the Pats already signed Mike Kafka to a reserve/futures contract. He was considered comparable to Hoyer as a possible developmental QB.

Funny enough, when I did that same math, it gave me a little hope.

I am not saying he is worth it, but 14-20 would typically be the value of the 3-5 QB in the board, depending on teams need at that position in this draft. Witha lot of teams needing them in this draft, and Mallett being at least equal to the top 3 guys out there, I am not sure it's that far fetched value wise.

I have serious doubt about this coming to fruition, but Lombardi is no dummy, he won't sink himself with Weedon, and if he replaces him it will be with someone he is very comfortable with. Lombardi having a son on staff may be all the confirmation he needs.

A terrific Argument, Brother Fletcher!! I salute you!!

Were that actually to come to pass, it would more than make up for all the emotional devastation I've gone through, since That Dark Hour in April of 2011, when I heard them call Ryan Mallett's name!! :rocker:

Ironic, too, that it was Lombardi, himself, before the fact, who informed us of the Pick.

I also agree that Patton would be a steal at 70 but if we got the 6th pick would there be a player you would keep it for would you automatically trade it. I would use it on someone like Star Lotulei. If not id definitely do a trade with the Rams they have 2 first rounders for the next 2 years. I think we could definitely get 2 firsts out of them for the 6 theyre not too many pieces away from competing

The question is always, who is there that someone would want to trade up for? This is a fairly flat draft at the top, without many true blue chip players. The guys who I can think of that teams might consider trading up for:

- One of the left tackles. Right now only Joeckel seems like a clear top 5 prospect, and he should be gone before #6. Fisher and Johnson would have to rise quite a bit to make it worth someone's while to trade up for them.

- One of the pass rushers. Bjoern Werner, Demontre Moore and Jarvis Jones seem like the 3 guys worth going after in the top 10, with Jones' spinal stenosis a medical red flag to be addressed.

- One of the tackles. Lotulelei seems like the obvious one, though Sheldon Richardson or Johnathan Hankins could rise.

- Dee Milliner. The only DB on the board who seems like he could warrant a top 10 pick.

That's about all that I can see worth trading for in this draft. I can't see anyone making a trade up for one of the QBs, and there are no offensive skill players that will likely go in the top 10, unless Keenan Allen's draft stock rises significantly.

I personally don't see anyone this year that I would keep the #6 pick for if someone made a decent offer, including Lotulelei. The question is, with a bevy of picks, is there someone that a team like the Rams would consider worth trading up for? Would they be willing to trade #16 and a 2014 1st to move up to #6? #22 plus something else? It seems to me that their biggest need is offensive line and WR, and they ought to be able to get either one of Fisher, Johnson or Chance Warmack at #16, and a solid WR at #22 or later.

Also, it's pretty clear that 2014 is going to be much stronger at the top than 2013, so it may be hard to get teams to give up their future 1st round picks.

What don't you like about Lotulelei? From what I've seen he looks like a legit top 10 prospect and would fill a big need.

That's probably not getting enough.... If they want him bad enough, it should be.... #6 for Mallet, and a later pick in the draft. Not swapping 1st rounders and Mallet.

I have nothing against Lotulelei, though I think he's a bit inconsistent and has gotten overhyped. I'd happily take him a bit later, and if I didn't have other options I wouldn't consider it a bad pick, but I'd still prefer to trade back.

Very good Point.

You do realize that that's essentially getting the Book Value of the #16 Pick, overall, for Mallett, right?? Going from #32 ~ I hope!! :D ~ all the way to #6?? You think the Browns'd need to sweeten the Deal??

With an @$$-awful QuarterBack Draft Class upon us, and little or nothing else available in the Trade Market, combined with Mister Lombardi's affinity for young Mallett, his prospectively adept fit for their System, and a great deal of trust both in Mad Bill's Word and in his Judgement, greatly enhanced by their rich History, working together...

The word after the pre-season was that the Pats were hiding what Mallett could really do. They were trying to trade Hoyer before they ended up cutting him, so he played a majority of the snaps and when Mallett did play, they had him turn around and hand-off or throw check downs. Teams caught onto this, and gave New England nothing of value for Hoyer(a guy the Pats put a 2nd round tender on to keep). He was consequently released. Not saying that this trade makes sense, but I believe the Pats might have found a gem in Mallett. I believe, and this is purely speculation, that he'd be the first QB drafted this year.

Mallett might get competition for suitors if Seattle makes Matt Flynn available or more options present themselves leading up to the draft. Also, you don't want to overvalue Mallett. That is, when New England acquired a second round pick (the second overall) from Kansas City in exchange for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel. I didn't complain. I don't believe Mallett's worth a first round pick, but if Cleveland's convinced that he's their answer at quarterback like Kansas City thought that of Cassel. Then swapping your first round pick for their first round pick is reasonable. But I can see New England requiring the inclusion of their 2013 third or fourth round pick as well.

A fairly weak draft class at the quarterback position could lead the Seahawks to look to maximize their value in Flynn by trading him to a quarterback-needy team.

Seattle isn’t strapped by Flynn’s salary so much that have to move him. With Wilson on a rookie contract for at least another two seasons (before he can renegotiate his contract), the overall expense to Seattle’s quarterback position is still reasonably affordable. That being said, backup quarterbacks aren’t usually paid $7.25 million either, which is what Flynn is due in 2013 (although only $2 million is guaranteed).

Matt Flynn could be trade option for teams needing a quarterback | ProFootballTalk

It's fashionable to dump on Pioli overvaluing Cassel. But finding a franchise QB is perhaps the hardest and most important goal for any team, and it often requires taking a few chances. Look at the Seahawks: they traded for Charlie Whitehurst, that didn't work out, they signed Matt Flynn, they drafted Russell Wilson, and it looks like they may have gotten lucky on 1 out of the 3.

Cassel wasn't a bad move at trying to find a QB that the Chiefs could win with. In 4 seasons he had one season as a Pro Bowl alternate in which the Chiefs won their division, and he was doing decently last year before hurting his hand and going on IR. He's struggled with a bad OL. But look at the guys taken with earlier draft picks, such as Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman. And look at all the QBs taken with 1st round picks who have struggled: Alex Smith (#1 in 2005), Vince Young (#3 in 2006), Matt Leinhart (#10 in 2006), Jamarcus Russell (#1 in 2007), Brady Quinn (#22 in 2007), Jake Locker (#8 in 2011), Blaine Gabbert (#10 in 2011), Christian Ponder (#12 in 2011), Brandon Weedon (#22 in 2012).

Hitting on a QB is hard. Teams that don't have one are desperate to get one, and if it takes swinging for the fences a few times its worth it. Who is there in this draft at #6 who is going to transform Cleveland into a contender in the AFC North? They have a solid defense. Adding another pass rusher, or another DT or CB would help, but I'm not sure it will make them any more likely to get past the competition. There's no WR worth taking. They have 2 good tackles and a decent OL. By far their overwhelming need is a QB to build around. They could sign Alex Smith or trade for Matt Flynn, and both would probably be improvements, but is either going to be the long term answer? Flynn couldn't beat out Russell Wilson, so I don't think he's likely to be a franchise QB. Smith has proven he doesn't have the arm to scare anyone, though he's a decent game manager. The Browns could reach for someone like Matt Barkley at #6, but is it likely that he's a better prospect than Mallett, especially with 2 years sitting behind Brady and learning patiently? I personally doubt it.

The Browns don't have a 2nd round pick, courtesy of the supplemental draft. But if they traded #6 to NE for Mallett and our 1st they would essentially recoup their 2nd round pick (a few spots higher) and still get a QB to build around, at cheap cost for 2 years. They could get a solid WR, OL or defensive player at the end of the first round. It's not a bad way to go. I'm guessing that Mallett is more likely to be ready to start if given the opportunity than a rookie would be, though it's purely a guess. Lombardi probably has some idea about that, if from no one else than his son. It's a gamble, but it might be less risky with more of a chance of reward than any other option. Score, and you're golden. Miss, and you go back to the drawing board. What the Browns would have given up was taling Barrett Jones instead of Chance Warmack at OG, or taking Kawann Short instead of Star Lotulelei at DT, or taking Xavier Rhodes instead of Dee Milliner at CB, or something along those lines.

I think it's also worthy of mention that the KC O-line was absolute garbage and they also gave Cassel a new OC and system practically every year, how is any QB supposed to suceed like that?

True.

But again, I can't emphasize enough how important getting a QB to build around is. Look at Washington - from last in the NFC to division champs in 1 year. Look at Seattle with Russell Wilson, or Indy with Andrew Luck. Both teams should be competitive for years.

Cleveland wasn't that far from being competitive, and Baltimore and Pittsburgh are both dealing with some age issues. Get a talented young QB to build around and the Browns are suddenly in good shape. Don't get it, and they're just spinning their wheels. It's worth taking a few risks.

None of us know what the Pats have in Mallett. He could be a bust, he could be phenomenal and the team is keeping him carefully under wraps. I'm guessing the FO and coaching staff have had plenty of opportunity to evaluate him. BB's comments have generally been positive.

Well....... yeah.

Admittedly, I'm throwing book value out the window. Look, given the QB class, and the fact that the browns are reasonably desperate at QB, and the fact that I don't think we are even remotely interested in moving him........ I'd say we make the Browns overpay for him.......... In a major way. :D

I actually do not think that this trade will take place. We don't need to move him and I don't think the browns will break the bank for him.

If belichick could really work this trade out that would be awesome.Even if we gave em mallett and our first rd pick thats aok. Hopefully there would be some desperate team that would want the 6 spot badly and give us their 1st 2nd and 3rd this year. That way we could pick up talent where we need it. If pats kept the 6th spot, then i would want them to pick up a DL. Wilfork needs help badly. With Dante Scar, he's been able to develop some late round or undrafted players. So i would hold off on gettin an OL with the 6th. Just my thought.

I'd trade that puppy back and load up on picks. Even if we wanted to grab Jonathon Cooper we could likely snag him later than 6th.

Just wish JJ Watt was in the draft this year (the one year the Pats had a chance for a high draft pick and the Raiders screw it up by actually being competitive. Who would have thunk it)
