The first time I met Bill Belichick was New Year's Eve day 2002, in a cemetery in Saddlebrook, N.J. There was nowhere else in the world I could have been that day. But less than 48 hours after his defending world champion Patriots had lost an AFC East tiebreaker and a chance to enter the playoffs and defend their title, Belichick chose to drive from New England to honor a fallen friend.

I started to get PFW in 77 or 78 when I was about 16 or 17. My local newstand carried it. Then, I started to subscribe to it. I even used to have it mailed to me when I was in the navy. Stationed in Italy, Iceland and San Diego. A couple of my friends thought I was a bookie...LOL...I showed them their state layout, head to head matchup page and Joel's columns of course.

I would get his Scouts Guide each year. I loved his quotes such as;

a. Harder to circumnavigate than the globe
b. looks like tarzan, but plays like jane
c. not on scholarship any longer


I remember reading about Belichick speaking at the Combine. Didn't realize they spoke that often. Joel also did a radio show on KMOX on Sunday Nights. Used to listen to that. I even got to speak to Steve Grogan on it once.
