just so i'm clear, this is only a problem for New England area?

DirecTV Subscribers will get the Super Bowl

For all you DirecTV subscribers concerned whether you will get the Super Bowl broadcast, you can relax. Just got an e-mail from DirecTV stating they have reached an agreement with Sunbeam Communications who owns Channel 7 and that service has been restored.

Although I have both cable and DirecTV hooked up to my main TV, the DirecTV picture is so much better because unlike cable they broadcast in true 1080P. So consider me psyched since I am hosting the Super Bowl party.

Re: DirecTV Subscribers will get the Super Bowl

DirecTV has little content that's in 1080p. Most of it is PPV movies at this point. NBC is broadcasting in 1080i so that is what you will get. The main reason why DirecTV looks better then cable in most cases is because DirecTV doesn't compress the signal like cable does.

I stand corrected.

I'll just Gronkize my point. Satellite good! Cable bad! Super Bowl on satellite! Me happy!

Correct. But it all depends on your provider and your TV. Having a compressed signal on a tiny/poor tv is less likely to be noticed. Having a compressed signal on a average TV will pass the eye test. Having a compressed signal on an excellent TV will be highly noticeable when compared to something like a BR disc. Less compression, better TV is the best way to get an excellent picture. Having had DTV from 2003-2010 and having the Sunday Ticket + Superfan ($$$) once the shift was made to HDTV all those years in California, I can attest that their compression rate was higher than the local cable companies due to the bandwidth needs for the satellite signal. But it was the only way to watch the Pats. Thus at the time DTV was poorer quality HDTV when compared to cable. There was actually a lawsuit brought up against them in the early HD years since the weren't actually broadcasting true HD signals. It was called HD-Lite by the techie followers. Since then it would appear that they have gone to MPEG4, and that they have leapfrogged the competition in their compression rates, but some signal is still lost when it is transcoded form MPEG2 to MPEG4. Now living just outside the home of the Pats I am very luck to say that I have Verizon FiOS and blows me away. It is the same TV I had just 3 years ago with DTV and this picture is stunning. From what I am reading...and I did just before I posted...HD image quality ranking right now is FiOS, Satellite, then Cable.

I am glad DTV subscribers will get to see the game. DTV would never have let you go without though. Remember the Pats Giants final game of the regular season in 2007. It was an NFL Network game...other channels found a way to get the rights to show a perfect season in the making.
