Edit: looking for more info, if anyone has any plz share...they said it will be to "just clean it up"

The Boston Globe reports that Rob Gronkowski will likely need his injured left ankle scoped following the Super Bowl.
Beat reporter Shalise Manza Young confirms that Gronk will play in Super Bowl XLVI, but his ankle will need to be "cleaned up" due to apparent ligament damage. While the operation doesn't sound major, it's clear Gronkowski will be at less than full strength against the Giants. An early-game aggravation would certainly have the potential to impact the Super Bowl's outcome

That leaves the implication that this is big news and it's a major injury, but in reality how many players have some type of work done after the season is over; I'm guessing 25%? Maybe more?

They will tape it up and put a brace on it and shoot him with painkillers and that anti-inflammatory that has been in the news lately...and his play will not be noticeably affected. Because it is the last game of the season. Then they'll go in and fix anything that needs to be fixed and he will have the whole offseason to recover.

BTW if you look up high ankle sprains on wikipedia it says the recovery time can be as little as 2-3 days. The fact that Gronk came back into the same game and played most of the rest of the day would seem to indicate that this was a mild injury as far as high ankle sprains go. I think we dodged an artillery shell.

Wow! A few days ago I added Rapaport to my twitter feed. I already have Reiss and SMY, so I thought he was a legitimate reporter.

Are you kidding me?

First, he "broke" a story about Gronkowski having ligament damage. Really? Is that not the definition of a strain? Then, after speculating about the same information that everyone else was given, the high ankle sprain comment form Gronk's father, he "breaks" a story about an "expectation" for needing surgery. Notice that there are no sources on either one of these. These are just his guesses.

Here are the facts as we know them. A source inside the Patriots organization did reveal that Gronk will be "fine" for the Super Bowl. A league source also said it was "just a sprain"- he did not say whether it was a high ankle sprain because it doesn't really matter. High ankle sprains vary in severity. Maurkice Pouncey was carted off the field last year. Roethlisberger could not walk without nearly falling over. Gronkowski had a slight limp.

Good chance he will need surgery, along with about 20 other players who also need a "scope".

Still don't know if this makes the injury sound any worse or not. Many players need to have injuries cleaned up after the season even if they don't miss any time because of the injury. A frayed tendon may not be as bad as it sounds.

BTW did any of you follow the link in the ESPN Patriots Blog report on this, which leads to another page and in that one is a link to the actual video which was broadcast in Western NY? Some reporter is interviewing Gronk's dad, and although it wasn't shown on camera, in the video the reporter said Dad said Gronk has a high ankle sprain and ALSO SAID HE WOULD BE FINE BY THE SUPER BOWL.

Of course the viral media focuses on the negative and ignores the positive.

Notice that "surgery" and "clean-up" are being used together in these reports. The only "clean-up" needed for a high ankle sprain would be arthroscopic to remove scar tissue. This sounds like a fairly big assumption since I doubt they know about the buildup of scar tissue yet and given the time between February 6th and the next football related activity for Gronk, the scar tissue (which is needed to repair any ligament damage) may clear up on its own without surgery.

Putting the scary "surgery" word without context is lazy. Unless you are prepared to provide that context, why bother reporting anything?

Earlier today Ordway said that his sources (and he does have them via Patriots Monday and Friday) told him that the improvement in Gronk's ankle over the last few days alone was amazing.
