Football journey: Sterling Moore - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Few interesting notes:

* He started playing football his senior year of highschool.

*Only a two star highschool recruit, he went to Laney Junior College for two years.

*His junior season, the only DI team that offered him to play, was SMU.

*Started at safety every snap against the Jets, funny thing, he never played safety ever in his football career.

Interesting...

Must have shown something good in practice to start against a hated division rival on the road at a position he had never played before as an undrafted rookie. And then he played pretty well...

He played the safety position like he'd been there all his life! Apart from the hit that took McCourty out he looked more than solid and I'd be happy to see him back there with Chung on Monday night because his play warrants him getting another start.

I thought he looked very good at times - a few times he was really out of place but you would expect that... seems the upside here is very good.

He was my pick to surprise solely based on quotes of players and coaches at Oakland training camp. In other words, the guy seemed to have "it" despite no statistical or performance record to prove anything.

Hustle, desire, working and studying, raw ability and coachability are traits of a Belichick find. Wish I'd put money on it.

Amazing he could get such positive reviews despite knocking out one of our best players accidentally.

I guess that's the type of thing that's forgivable in your first game playing a new position, not so much after being the starter and picked for two pro bowls.

Yeah, I like this kid's potential. Only played highschool at CB 1 year, 2 years at a junior college, and 2 years at SMU. Then he looks good at safety playing every snap for an NFL team.

He must be very coachable.

Moore battled knee injuries all throughout his Sr. year. Several articles go one to say that the kid tried to sneak his way on the field several times AFTER the medical staff ruled him out for the game. Once he was cleared to play (but far from 100%) , June Jones, the coach for SMU put him in the starting lineup and he made plays immediately.

Based on his raw talent, not sure how much higher the kid would have been drafted but it seems that his heart and guts do not need any improvement.

Classic example of a "Gamer". A good story....

I hope this guy turns out to be our Tom Brady of the safety position.

Good stuff, thanks. Yeah, while some are filling out their draft bingo cards looking for busts, the coach is looking for players no matter where he finds them.

Having been privileged to watch early Troy Brown as he was cut, then relegated to the special teams only category by most, you see what it really takes to be a football player, no matter where you are drafted.

Took him years to go from returner to third down receiver to actually being a very successful starting receiver. He simply did the job whenever opportunities came, no matter what labels were put on him.

It's weird. Apparently the Raiders coaches liked him but yet cut him from their PS.
Their loss is our gain.

Thought that I read somewhere that Parcells said that he cut Troy Brown because he felt that he was "only" giving 100% as opposed to the 110% he gave to make the team as a 9th rd or whatever pick. His point was that for Brown to stay on a roster and be successful, he needed to give 110%. Amazing.

I like how he tackles, wraps around a players feet instead of the bump and hope player
falls over.

I was thinking Moore reminded me of Woodhead, tons of heart, nose for the game, loved by the coaches but cut anyway. Why not throw in being a castoff of one of our favorinte teams?
