Does a Safety count as a turnover?

If not, then the Patriots won the turnover battle 1-0 yesterday, and still lost the game. Has that ever happened in the Patriots' Belichick era?

I know the opposite has happend many times (see Dallas two weeks ago) where we lose the turnover battle but still win the game.

Well, first off, the Safety should not have been allowed since Troy Polamalu punched the ball into the endzone. That's actually a penalty. The Pats should have been given a new set of downs.. The refs and replay official upstairs missed it, though it was shown, bright as day, in the replays..

As for having lost the game while winning the turnover battle. I don't remember if it's happened before, but I would think it has at least once prior.. But, again, I don't remember for sure.

The answer to your title is 10/30/2011

It is rare. They almost never lose if they don't turn it over.

I really question why there is a penalty for knocking the ball into the end zone

I don't recall a penalty for an offensive player to fumble the ball in the middle of the field and fall down and push it forwards a few yards and out of bounds.

Polamalu was bragging on the sideline that he punched the ball.

That was about the only big play he made all day running around like nutcase.

The penalty isn't for knocking the ball into the end zone. The penalty involves intentionally advancing the ball without having control of it. It's one of those little understood penalties, but it's been around forever..
