Good column by CSN's Mary Paoletti on what keeps Wes Welker motivated:

Welker: I still feel there's a lot of doubters

“I still feel like there’s a lot of doubters that I can’t do a lot of things on the field and that my value isn’t as great as a lot of the other guys out there,".

"There’s always something to prove and work on and get better at.”

It's an interesting attitude for a wide receiver who's caught more than 100 passes in three of the last four seasons. Despite 86 catches and 848 yards last year, his averages in a Patriots uniform are impressive: 108 receptions, 1,134 yards and 5.5 touchdowns in 15.25 games.

Where Welker is confident, he's not content.

“I’m sure there are -- there’s no doubt. ... They’ll always try to (argue the numbers).”

I've certainly never doubted his attitude that's for sure. He get's a gold star in that dept.

As I've said before: if every Patriot had Welker's determination and work ethic, not only would the Patriots go 19–0 this year, they'd make the 59-0 drubbing of the Titans in 2009 look like a squeaker by comparison.

He's right, the fact that even some Patriot fans don't appreciate him makes clear that many still doubt him.

Leadership by example. He's the poster boy for that football-wise.

All he has to do is look at the "Trade Welker" threads to know he's right. I for one have 0 doubts about his motivation and physical ability. He's already proven that over the past 4 seasons as a Patriot. I hope he retires here and one day lands in the Patriots Hall of Fame as the leading receiver.

I think we could have just as easily read an interview with Edelman with little or no drop off in enjoyment.

Love the guy, the minute we traded for him I had a pants tent. Kept telling my friends "we got a Troy Brown replacement!" They rolled their eyes
Most people I talked to in life(including friends and family members) had no clue who he was ...looking back

I think anyone who doubts Wes Welker doesn't know Wes Welker and his single minded determination. He's going to have great year, and I'm planning on drafting him tomorrow for my fantasy team.

Gotta love people like Welker. There are no obstacles in life. Just the next challenge to push through. I rememberthe stories when people started to realize what we had in 2007 and his High School coach saying that Welker would push himself beyond his abilities. For example, he'd run til he'd puke, pick himself up and keep on going.

There's no way Welker makes this team.

I dunno, that thread was probably the most widely trashed one on here since Trade Brady. If anything, I'd say it's an example of how much fans here *do* appreciate Welker.

Those who "doubt" Welker's value don't put a lot of stock on intangibles.

"[Welker]: 'I just try to concentrate on what I can control and that is going out and believing in myself.'

...The words are simple to understand, but difficult to do, because most people don't have that level of focus. We spend a lot of time training our guys to focus, to be more clear minded. Some guys, like Welker--the biggest over achiever I've ever coached--are just born with the ability to focus. It's a talent, just like speed, quickness and strength.

Wes was able to do things that people a lot more "talented" than him couldn't do because of his confidence.....He didn't worry about how good the other guy might be or what the other guy was trying to do. He was just focused on himself."

--Mike Leach, Welker's college coach, from Swing Your Sword

I can never think of him as Wes Welker after Fitzy's tag line of "White Wes Welker" permanently altered my NFL schemata for ever.

Bastard!

Regarding Edelman...where the heck has he been in the first 2 games?

They only had him on the field for ~8 snaps in game 1, and then he was held out of game 2 b/c of injuries.

Apparently he's good to go for this week, though.

I'd like to make a deal with Wes: I'll keep doubting him as long as he keeps proving me wrong
