It seems that we ahve Hoyer through 2012, although he would presumably would cost us $2.8M for 2012 (1st round tender).

I expect that we will try yet again to find potentiasl competition and a future #2.

Much like Cassel (whom the piece on All Access this week showed Bill and Scott saw the potential in from year 1) Hoyer is probably too valuable to trade at this juncture as he is more valuable on the roster than the draft pick compensation for him would be. After next season he's an RFA if the rules revert to 4 years. He could be targeted or shopped at that time. Bill isn't the kind of HC who is inclined to spend a lot of valuable rep time showcasing a backup QB though. They get limited reps in pre season and are asked to run aspects of the offense and not showcase any particular individual skill set, either. Which is why guys like Gutz and KOC couldn't cut it here...they couldn't read defenses and lacked poise and tended to revert to quickly to trying to use their legs to salvage broken plays. Which reminds me of what Bill said to Cassel as a rookie and repeated at the probowl...you don't lose games throwing a incompletions. You lose games by making bad decisions.

I expect them to continue mining the later rounds and UDFA's for developable QB talent. The last time we had a first round QB on the roster he couldn't run Bill's offense because he was a bad decision maker and as is often the case with that level of often overhyped talent he didn't seem all that inclined to work on adapting his skillset to suit this offense...which for continuity sake is the way it is done here.

You're assuming that the plan is, in fact, to keep him that long.

I wouldn't be surprised if they got another QB in the system this year (especially if the rosters get expanded) and then put just a second-round tender on him.

From the little we have seen of him I think we can say he has enough to potential to get a chance. Though that may be more related to lack of overall talent in the league at the position. He has shown he is accurate and seems to be grasping the offense which is more that alot of starters can say.

As to the trade talk I think that is a bit premature. First we dont have another back up and secondly we got a 2 for Cassel who had playing time and a chance to prove himself so what are you really going to get in return at this point.

If Hoyer is playing that means the season is over that much I know. As far as trading him, I think our tender would be dependant on the interest we generate before tendering him. No doubt we will shop him before he is tendered because if we are offered a high 2nd or low first it might be too much to refuse.

Fix'd your post.

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi believes Patriots backup Brian Hoyer makes a better trade target for quarterback-needy teams than Eagles backup Kevin Kolb.
That's not to say Lombardi believes Hoyer is a better QB, just that the Eagles believe they can get "a great price" for Kolb. "If teams evaluate New England's Week 17 game against Miami," said Lombardi, "they'd see that Hoyer demonstrates the skills needed to be a starter." In 42 career attempts, Hoyer has posted a 61.9 completion rate, 6.3 yards per attempt, and 77.9 passer rating. His passer rating in preseason games is just north of 95.0

If Hoyer is playing for an extended period of time I would likely agree then again Cassel played well enough we should have made the playoffs that year.

But IMO your back up QB should be good enough to go at least .500 over a short period of time. This ensures the team can stay afloat until the starter returns. Sure you hope to develope guys that can get you picks in a trade or eventually replace the incombant and this search is more important when you dont have Brady.

I think BB has shown more than enough confidence in Hoyer for me to think he could manage the team short term if needed and at least hit the .500 bar stated above.

ehh he has potential, but not right now. maybe later on in his career.
