A happy, healthy Steve Smith (either one of them for that matter) would be a tremendous asset to this team. Unfortunately, the Steve Smith being referenced in this thread does not have the reputation for being happy or healthy terribly much.

What I like about Smith is he plays with a chip on his shoulder the size of a small school bus. In the past when healthy that has translated into a small receiver playing like a big man, and often looking like a man among boys on the field. I for one respect that level of play, competition, and emotion on football Sunday. I would take a flier on him, but a low draft pick based on recent health issues and age....6th or 7th, perhaps giving it some conditions based on performance and sticking with the team. Panthers are in rebuilding mode, so they will be looking to collect draft picks, and or young players in trade.

You could perhaps make the comparison that Smith is kinda the Rodney Harrison of the offense. He brings that fight and passion to the game, and he means business when he's on the field...that can translate to not everyone liking him, on and off the field. I think BB has demonstrated the ability to handle players like that.

All that said, in a perfect world I would give our #28 pick for Larry Fitzgerald and not look back.

Let's not forget that in addition to the injuries and attitude, Smith's contract is for $7M in 2011 and $7.75M in 2012. No way without a serious contract adjustment.

Lombari suggests Smith to the Patriots for a second-round pick as a good fit for both sides. The contending Pats need an outside/downfield threat at receiver while the rebuilding Panthers should be getting their hands on as many draft picks as possible. It just so happens that New England holds Carolina's second-rounder after the Panthers' ill-advised trade for Armanti Edwards last year. It's a deal that makes sense, at least on paper. I wouldn't give the 33 pick as they suggest but if we could get him for a later pick I think it would be a good trade (3rd or 4th round).

Ya I was having this discussion with my friend the other day. I honestly don't know what to think, I agree that the 33 pick is a bit high for smith, but on the other hand, he is a great talent, and we all know players have amazing turnarounds after coming to N.E. The only reason I'm leaning towards saying this is a bad idea for the pats is b/c of his history of getting in trouble, i.e fighting with teammates.

We already injured older WR in deion. Adding smith of 4-5 yrs ago i am all for it but now he is injured and not 100%.

if we are going to add someone i prefer a draft pick a high one to develop for brady over the last 4-5 yrs,Next year we will talking about deion replacement and i am not sure how i feel next year or in 2013 we are talking about replacing 2 guys at the same time.

Smith will be 32 years old if the season starts on time. Speed Receivers don't age that well. Randy Moss is a good example of that.

Smith is more than a little worse than Moss. A lot more than a little.

I actually see him as the opposite of Moss, a total prick off the field but someone who goes all out of the field.

I don't know how much he has left in the tank but I would much rather make a move for the 57th overall pick thank wait 2-3 years for a rookie's potential. Draft picks are 50/50 at best.

But alas, no CBA = no trades, the Patriots are stacked but can't deal the picks for veteran players.

I can't believe people would actually consider this, Smith is a GREAT talent, BUT he is getting older and he is small. Good but small. I'm sure he would excel here in NE, but it still doesn't change the fact that there still wouldn't be a starting WR over 6 ft, and that's just sad. I love our WR core, filled with great bunch of guys but it would be almost perfect if we could get a receiver over 6ft.

I would be absolutely dumbfounded to see BB trade a 2nd round pick, especially the 33rd overall for Steve Smith. I would be shocked either way if the Patriots traded for Smith anything more than a 5th rounder.

While I would be all for trading a relatively late pick for him I'd much rather see us pick up someone like Malcom Floyd or Steve Smith from the Giants.

Hey folks... I'm a Panthers fan and stumbled upon this thread after hearing about the rumors the Pats might be interested in Smitty.. I have to say I'm surprised at some of the negativity towards him, and figured I'd give a "scouting report" to help clear up some misconceptions.

1) I noticed a lot of people bringing up the fight he was in with Ken Lucas. Yes, that was a dumb move, but that's just how Smith is. The guy is one of, if not the most competitive players I have ever seen play in the NFL. He made a mistake, and has stayed clear of anything like that ever since it happened.

2) The short thing.. I know you guys are sick of short receivers, but having seen Smitty play for the past decade, the guy plays like he's 7 foot tall. There is a reason Revis, when asked about Smith, called him a "competitor". His height has never been an issue in his entire career.

3) He's old! Yeah, he's 31, but he still has a few seasons left playing at a high level.

Some may look at his recent stats and see a red flag, but go ahead and look at the quarterbacks he's had throwing him the ball.. Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore, and Jimmy Clausen... Smitty with a guy like Brady would be unreal good. I can't tell you how many times last season where Smitty was literally 5-10 yards away from the closest defender, WIDE open, but still wasn't thrown a pass because Clausen was too afraid to throw down field and just checked it down.

What you'll get from Smith:
-He will NEVER give up on the team. The Panthers were 2-14 this season, yet he treated every game like a playoff game, never giving up on plays or slacking because of horrid quarterback play.
-Despite said horrid quarterback play plaguing the Panthers for the past two seasons, he's kept his mouth shut(for the most part) and played on.
-Still able to get open down field consistently, but has lacked an accurate deep passer. Up until last season, the Panthers had no GOOD #2 or #3 receivers, and the TE's used were there for blocking. Smitty on a team with other receiving threats to take some pressure off of him = gold.
