Steelers' Starks may be out for season

Steelers tackle Max Starks has a serious neck injury involving a disc and may not play again this season.

Starks was consulting with doctors late today to determine if the injury required surgery, or if it would heal over time without surgery using physical therapy instead, a source close to Starks told the Post-Gazette.

Did he play on Sunday, or has this been a lingering issue costing him playing time?

Wow, a serious neck injury? I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

I'm 99% sure I saw him play Monday night; I'm pretty sure he's played in every game this year.

Yeah, that's certainly not something you want to take any chances with.

The source emphasized that the injury does not threaten Starks career.

Starks, the Steelers starting left tackle, left Monday night's game in Cincinnati with what coach Mike Tomlin described as "stingers" in his neck. He returned to play but then left the game for good. Tomlin again described Starks' injury as a "stinger" at his press conference today.

But an MRI later showed it to be a more serious injury of a disc in the upper verterbrae or neck area.

As much as it makes me happy that the Steelers will be missing one of their guys this Sunday, it sucks that it is a neck injury and I hope he eventually recovers 100%.

Hope he gets better soon.

does this mean we can make t-shirts up celebrating his injury liek Steelers fans did when Brady got hurt. Absolute classless fanbase.

Every team has idiots in their fan bases, Steelers probably more than most. Doesn't mean all fans are classless.

Max has played in all the games this year, but went out of Monday's game with what Tomlin called a stinger in the post-game press conference. This is a huge loss for our already injury-proned Oline.

Looks like we're left with Jonathan Scott or Hills at LT. A journeyman or a guy who's never really played a game in his life at arguably the most important position on offense besides QB...ugh. I wonder if they'd consider swinging Essex or Adams out there.

Funny about the "classless" comment. The Steelers have a pretty big fanbase, so I guess it's possible we have more stooges in our ranks than most teams (just based on percentages LOL). I'm sure the handful of Steelers trolls that show up on other teams' boards aren't very classy, but I don't think they're representative any more than we can judge an entire fanbase from the trolls on our boards... By and large, I think that it's a pretty informed, passionate group.

For the season, that can be a problem for you guys. As far as your upcoming game against us? No need to worry much.

Our pass rush is pathetic and non-existent, ranking 24th in the league in sacks. Even when we DO occasionally get to the QB, he'll find away to scramble away and complete a 15+ yard pass. And now we're playing the toughest QB in the NFL to bring down.

You're right, it's the vocal minority that get noticed and as a result the entire fanbase gets called out for it. Unfortunately a small group of idiots tend to talk a lot and it gives the incorrect appearance that all of a team's fans are that way. Works that way with every fan base. End result is Steeler fans thinking all Patriot fans are (fill in the blanks), Pats fans thinking all Steeler fans are (fill in the blank.)

One of their main forums has a poll up with an option to hope for Brady breaking his leg.

Now thats the epitome of class if I ever saw it.

I'm reading the AP news reports and they're saying that his injury is not "career-threatening". How is a herniated disc in your neck not a career-threatening injury for a football player? They'll have to remove the herniated disc and fuse the two neck bones together. Once they do that, the discs above and below the fused vertebrae will be much more susceptible to herniating. The guy's in trouble no matter how he looks at it.

Yup, I've seen it too. Although again, I don't know that it's sound to extrapolate based on one thread by a single (if decidedly moronic) poster. No reasonable person roots for injuries.

Did you read the replies btw? There are 3 pages of them, and only two of them make any mention of "breaking legs"--and those two mention it only to say the opposite, that they want to win big but don't want any serious injuries. (The thread is about "how bad do you want to beat the Pats", and the OP lumps the "winning big" poll option in with "breaking legs"...I think any votes for that option are for the former, not the latter.)

Yup sounds ominous. Spine-related problems effectively ended the career of our previous LT, Marvel Smith.

We've lost both our starting tackles this year to the IR. You can say it's bad luck, but it's also lack of foresight and development on our part to a degree. We've drafted poorly in the last several years for the OL and it shows, both in the quality of our starters and the quality of our depth (Pouncey being the obvious exception, he could be a future Pro Bowler.)

I think the one consolation is we won the SB in '08 with arguably the worst OL in the history of SB winners...although that year's D was truly dominant, whereas I think this year's is merely good.

Steelers may be down their starting LG for this week as well. At least Ben has nice things to say about Tommy, compared to some Steeler fans and his armchair critics here...

The good news for the Steelers' battered offensive line: an MRI confirmed that knee and ankle injuries suffered by Chris Kemoeatu on the same play last Monday night are not serious.

The bad news for Kemoeatu and the Steelers is that the starting left guard is questionable at best to play Sunday night against the visiting Patriots.

Kemoeatu, who sprained both his knee and ankle when teammate Trai Essex fell on his lower right leg, said he will not try to practice until Friday. If Kemoeatu is not able to go, then he almost will certainly miss Sunday night's game.

"I'm not feeling too good," Kemoeatu said. "It's nothing major. I think it just needs a little rest."

If he is unable to play Sunday night, Ramon Foster likely will start in his place.

• Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger can't wait to face New England counterpart Tom Brady for the first time since 2007. "For me, it's fun because Tom Brady, who I think is probably the greatest in the game right now, is on the other side,'' Roethlisberger said Wednesday of Brady, who joins him as the only active quarterback to win at least two Super Bowls. "To watch him go against this great defense is going to be fun as well. He's a good passer. He's a good leader. He's really something special. He's as good as it gets.'' Roethlisberger is 1-3 against Brady (including playoffs). Roethlisberger is 2-3 against New England, defeating Matt Cassel and the Patriots 33-10 in '08, when Brady was out with a knee injury.
