Mayo & Spikes - Eye Popping Numbers

Big Kudos to Dane Fletcher as well.

Played well in the Nickel package as well.

Haven't reviewed the game yet but it looks like Fletcher game for Guyton after Belichick demonstrated his disgust with Guyton's pathetic attemt at a tackle of Flacco on his first down run near the sideline...

Nah. Like I said, Ngata is better. Williams would struggle to make a list of the top 5 defenders in the NFL.

IMO, the top 5 DTs in the league are:
1.Kevin Williams
2.Ngata
3.Wilfork
4.Jay Ratliff
5.Darnell Dockett

I would start with Suh for a rookie that guy is putting up some phenominal numbers for a DT. int, about a sack a game? i think he is an absolute star

Given that Ngata is just 26 years old and the other guys on the list are all 29+, the original choice of Ngata as the 1 player you'd pick to start building a franchise around seems pretty solid.

And to think of how much crap I got when I said that Mayo was a better overall ILB right now than Ray Lewis. He and Spikes completely controlled the middle against the run today.

I think that you were just way ahead of most of us. The very idea was revolutionary. The best ideas are never embraced when introduced.

It's hard to name a better DT over the last few years than Kevin Williams. Ngata has elite talent, but never could put it all together. In fact, he fell in the draft because of motor concerns. I totally predicted a huge season for him, and he hasn't let me down. The main factor, of course, is that he's in a contract year. He's going to be elite this season, get paid, and then revert back to "semi-sloth" mode, where he preforms far under his potential.

And to be on topic, I also was impressed by Mayo

How is this undrafted free agent all ready on the field in the fourth quarter and overtime ? The kid has never played inside linebacker before, now in week five he's in crunch time. Absolutely amazing. Congratulations kid.

Big credit for the ILB numbers go to Wilfork at RE and Cunninham and Ninko who were HUGE in turning everything inside between the tackles. Best jobs on the edge all season.

Nah. I just think that people jumped on it immediately because it was a comparison to Ray Lewis. I kept trying to tell people (as did ausbacker) that I wasn't taking anything away from Lewis whatsoever. There is no denying what he's done. But he's looking an awful lot like Father Time has caught up with him at this point. And, as of today, I think Mayo is the better all around ILB. I didn't see anything today when directly comparing the two that would change my mind on that.

To be pedantic, a tackler isn't a playmaker. The knock on Mayo - and he's said it himself - is that he fails to occupy the other columns in the stat sheet. Sacks. Forced fumbles. Picks. Even passes defended. Until he starts to make big plays it's tough to look at him as more than a tackling machine. Certainly a valuable part of the D but not a play maker.

With respect, this is splitting hairs. Remember all those long drives in preseason and the first few games? When Mayo and Spikes weren't working in synchrony? All these tackles lead to possession change via downs and IMO are big plays. 3rd and 1 and you get a stop? Big play. I don't know how to attribute the success of these two guys but I will take them all week long.

Yeah Mayo and Spikes are doing what we dared to dream in the preseason, Cunningham is stepping up as my binky, and Dane Fletcher has always been a poor man's Brian Urlacher IMO.

thread title should be "Mayo and Spikes - Eye Gouging Numbers"

They both played well vs the run and I'm happy with their performance. But IMO a play maker is a rarer breed. It's the guy who makes the pick only 1 in 100 guys make, or gets to the qb after never giving up and gets the strip sack.

Off the top of my head guys like Ed Reed, Troy P, Clay Matthews, James Harrison.

If Mayo reaches that level of play making, this team will be in very good shape.

Jerod Mayo leads the AFC in tackles

61 tackles this season, just two shy of LaRon Landry of the Redskins.

Pat Chung (47 tackles) is our second leading tackler and tied for 15th in the NFL.

Congrats to Mayo on the enormous achievement.

Re: Jerod Mayo leads the AFC in tackles

When was the last time that 2 ILB's had as many tackles as Mayo and Spikes?

Re: Jerod Mayo leads the AFC in tackles

Where are the naysayers who believed the mantra that Mayo is toast... he is playing extremely well.

He is not flashy, but a very steady player.. he and Spikes are the real deal.
