An interesting piece from Reiss:

Belichick explained the team’s approach at the time, saying that [Danny] Woodhead was at the top of their list regardless of position.

Obviously, they felt the same way about Welker.

With this in mind, Belichick said there are currently “3 or 4 guys that I’m surprised they’re not on NFL rosters. I think if we had an opportunity to put one of them on our roster, that’s something we’d have to think about.”

Belichick did not reveal the names of those players.

Thoughts on who those folks might be?

I have no idea, though some of the Draft Forum gurus probably have some very good opinions. For example I think most of the rest of us knew little or nothing about Woodhead prior to his being picked up by the Pats.

That quote makes no sense BB!

If there are 3 or 4 guys that are not on anyone's roster you can sign them. Nothing stops you, even if they are on a PS you can sign a guy off of the PS and onto the 53.

Maybe he meant there are 3-4 guys on the 53 roster that don't get activated to the 44 that he would sign if he had the chance. Or that only play ST that he thinks ought be a starter. But the quote as he said it makes no sense.

“Like Mel Kiper’s best player available,” Belichick said, smiling. “At the start of the season, I think that’s what each team has – you have your best-players-available list. Here are the top 5, 6, 7 guys that aren’t on an NFL roster that you would like to have – whether you create a spot for them, or when you have a spot or a need.

Woodhead was part of the “Mel Kiper” category.

I'm totally confused by Reiss' writing. Woodhead was on an NFL roster, the Jets'.

I assumed he was referring to the week he spent being a FA before a roster spot opened up and we signed him.

It makes no sense especially in regards to Woodhead. He was on the Jets roster until the week we signed him. So maybe that means that he is referring to guys that are not on the Active roster on Sundays.

:confused2:

Maroney was traded 9/14, Woodhead was waived 9/14. Patriots signed Woodhead on 9/18. On 9/18 BB determined that of all the non-rostered players, Woodhead was the best and deserved the open roster spot. I see no conflicts or confusion.

I heard from Borges that BB is looking to trade for Lawrence Maroney of Denver,Richard Seymour of the Raiders and a guy I think named Randy Moss of the Vikings

I think Borges is just trying to stir up our hopes

I think he is talking about practice squads and free agents. Like Nate Davis is on the 49er practice squad which I find unbelievable. Myron Rolle was a guy a lot of people talked about, he took a year out of football to go get his masters in Oxford before declaring for the draft. I'm sure BB would love to get his hands on a guy like that if he had the room on his roster.

I was thinking that it was not consistent with this part:

Was Woodhead on the list before he was cut, or did he jump to the top of the list between 9/14 and 9/18?

The bottom of the 53 is either developmental draft picks (e.g. Price) or more commonly ST stars. If you take a good player off someone's PS for your 53, they probably have to be at least as good an ST player as the guy you cut, possibly fill his ST role and have higher perceived upside.

I think people are being too literal here. I believe they keep track of players available, just hanging on, like the 53rd player, or on teams practice squads. Chances are these types of players will become available, as they are always bouncing on and off rosters and practice squads.

If they have a spot on the squad or the ps and no glaring need they grab them.

The other category is depth, with next best player at each position in case they need emergency depth.

He was on our team for 4 years and people still don't know how to spell his name.

I'm surprised that the former starting G for the Phins, Donald Thomas, is still out there. They moved him over from RG and he sucked at LG, but when he was a starter on the right side, he looked really good.

He may be out there because it's so hard to integrate a guard into an OL.

Belichick obviously had a few guys in mind when he made the quote and was probably looking for a sound pass catching back who could block a little to replace Maroney and Kevin Faulk. Woodhead fell into his lap and has proven to be a great pick up so far. I agree, I don't think this is a confusing quote at all. There are boatloads of street free agents out there who could be helpful depending on need.

I had hoped that Thomas would fall to the Pats' pick in the 6th round of the 2008 draft, but Miami chose him just 2 spots ahead of us. He's been hurt most of the 2 years he spent there, so maybe he was still hurt when he was waived. If healthy, he has more upside than either of our backup interior linemen.

I'm still pissed-off that Bill threw away his 7th-rounder just to move up to draft UDFA-talent Matt Slater in the 5th effin round. With that 7th-rounder, he could've had Waltham MA native & Bentley grad Mackenzy Bernadeau, who now starts at LG for the Panthers.
