What do we do with Mankins ?

I think this is exactly right. The team risks being stuck with a highly paid unhappy malcontent who can't be traded. How is that a win? I almost think they'll just revoke the tender. He's a FA at the end of the year if they don't franchise, so they'll get a supplemental pick. If they let him go now, they'll get a supplemental pick as well. But probably not as high as the deal he signs for the remainder of the year won't be as large maybe.

I believe because Mankins was tendered he would not be a qualified UFA for comp purposes were he to be released, which is what a revocation of the tender would constitute.

In order to qualify for the comp equation, a player must have been a true Unrestricted Free Agent whose contract had expired or was voided after the previous season (i.e., he cannot have been released by his old team); he must sign during the UFA signing period (which ended July 22 last year); if he signs after June 1, he must have been tendered a June 1 qualifying offer by his old team; his compensatory value must be above a specific minimum amount; and he cannot have been permanently released by his new team before a certain point in the season (which seems to be after Week 10) or, possibly, before getting a certain amount of playing time, unless he was claimed off waivers by another team.

Picture of the Day candidate. I esp. like the face of the dude in the background,

Mankins is insurance against Connolly or Neal getting injured. I'd rather have a disgruntled Mankins starting rather than Ojinnaka or Orhnberger.

So would I. Wendell & Oburger have to be the worst pair of backup C/Gs in football. And Oji & LeVoir don't inspire much confidence, either.

At least 1 of our top 7 picks next year must be spent on an OLman, or 2.

Let's trade him to Seattle for a 1st and then welcome him back with open arms around 2015.

Beat me to it!

I hope he shows up week 10 personally. I think if our O line keeps playing as they are, Mankins doesn't start until someone gets injured, but if we plan on going on a post season run, we'll need some insurance to keep Brady safe to get another SB MVP!

If I'm BB, I don't let him see the field all season (barring injuries) if he holds out until week 10

I think it has to be 2. 2 + a RB + 4 on the Defensive Side assuming Branch and the rookie WRs look OK.

Yup, Belichick is a hero for not paying $7M for an OG. If a Neal injury sometime this year is inevitable, I trust that you will enjoy watching Ohrnberger (who couldn't even make the team at the start of the season). Oh, did I mention that no one else wanted him for their 53 either?

You're wrong on several counts.

1. Mankins wanted 8M per season, ie Jahri Evans money. The Pats DID offer him 7M but he rejected that offer. Not only that he said something that angered Kraft and the offer was pulled off the table because Mankins wouldn't issue a public apology. Mankins was the culprit of his own situation so I don't see why anybody would take his side on the contract issue here.

2. Mankins should be back in week 10 so he can earn his credits for free agency. At that time he'll be kept on as cheap insurance. When he finally leaves for free agency the Pats can get back up to a 3rd round pick for him. This is a no lose situation and BB made the right move considering everything that happened with Mankins.

3. Meanwhile Connolly has made Mankins look extremely REPLACEABLE. This OL hasn't skipped a beat and arguably is playing better without him. Mankins was slightly overrated. He was no Hannah even though some people tried to hype him up to be that kind of player.

what happens if he returns week 10, but we dont let him play???
We pay him, then he becomes a free agent. This happens whether he plays or is inactive.

As for what to do with Mankins, this is probably the best solution.

Let him go.

I figure he'll be back eventually, but I wonder how brilliant he feels now. He's getting paid ZERO and the Pats offensive line has looked good. He's not exactly a bright guy. Also, he's hasn't played a down in a very, very long time. How much help can he even be at this point? We need a third 1st Round pick.

Smack him in the face with a franchise tag. Ship him to football Siberia (Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland, Oakland etc.)
