Was this a Breakout Game by the Patriots Next Generation Defense?

I'm one of the younger fans, and sadly, the first season I seriously watched football was the one where the Bills went 3-13. So all I've known my entire football watching career is terrible Bills teams.

Eh, I still love them, despite their abhorrent play.

We need to get out line in order, and get ourselves a real franchise QB.

One thing though, your DB play need definite work. That's a glaring weakness right there, and teams will exploit it.

i'm not as concerned with the backfield as much as the defensive line. Vince Wilfork is the only playmaker there and the rest are average to below average (Mike Wright).

Absolutely. Where opinion enters is when a person looks at the Chung pick and says "Awesome play by Chung!" and another says " Wow, what a terrible throw right to the safety!".

It's a matter of perspective. I am as guilty of this as anyone. I just do not see this as any kind of breakout, dominating defensive performance.

Just a matter of defining breakout I suppose.

Read Bruschi's piece on it. That int wasn't a terrible throw by Henne so much as it was a miscommunication between Henne and Marshall resulting from Chung learning from his mistakes and adapting on the fly. Granted, it's a play that you expect Chung to make, but he made it possible by being a good, and improving, player.

And also being coachable... which is huge considering the troubles that Meriweather has been having so far this season.

“[Miami quarterback Chad Henne] threw it right to me. I was shocked at first. You have to be in the right spot at the right time,” Chung said. “The opportunity came, so I took it.”

I don't get to see too many Pats games, but the best thing that I saw last nite was the way BB encouraged his players.

Having read about the benching of Butler, wondered if BB was the sour old grouch that sits the player down and says he's no good, or is the encouraging father figure developing the new defenders?

It was good to see he is the later.

On an aside, I bet BB is having a blast with the young kids,((,until they miss assignments)). Wonder where BB thinks we will be in a few games?

I wonder if Brady's 5 rushes for 6 yards might skew the running numbers a bit?

Is this rhetorical?

Brady took 2 knees for -2 yards. You want to back that out? fine. Why would I back out the other 3 rushes?

I'll throw in Hoyer 1 for -1 if you like.

About 3 seconds of division here hmmm......add 3 to the numerator , subtract 3 from the denominator......ok, 4.20690.

Still a big delta there relative to 4.8 by the fins.

The thread is about how great/not great the defense played. I'll continue to think this defense has a long way to go and everyone else can wait around 30 more games for Ninkovitz to record INT #3,#4.

This was a decent game by our defense ... other teams will make adjustments now ... strap it up and let's hope they improve more.

Being in the right place at the right time is good instincts. It's not like the ball took a completely ******ed bounce or angle or anything. Good play by him, gift wrapped or not.

If the Pats can beat the Ravens after the bye, they'll be in terrific shape, to the point where--particularly considering the anticipated improvement in the defense--11 wins would be a disappointment.

The only losses I could foresee in the last 11 would be at SD, at Pitt, Indy, and Green Bay. As long as they don't lose all of those, they'll get to 12+.

Now that the road game monkey and the second half monkey are off their backs, the Pats could split those four and get to 12-4 (although I still think this is an 11-5 team). If you break the rest of the season into quarters, I can see 3-1 in each part.

The Ravens game should be great - lots of motivation on both sides in that one. The "Black & Blue" Division sure looks less daunting after 4 weeks. Pre-season, it looked like Chicago, Minnesota and Green Bay would all be Pats losses. Not so much anymore. Chicago's offensive line is Buffalo-esque and the Vikings should have moved on from Bret. Stop Adrian Peterson and you've stopped the Vikes. Green Bay's for real.

Belichick's Defenses are always designed to accomplish the obvious. The purpose of every Defense is to stop the other Team from scoring. Period. End of Story.

Obvious isn't it? However the fans and stat seekers always look for sub-optimizations. Some fans want great stats or "dominance". Belichick knows seeking sub-optimum goals at the possible cost of the main goal is erroneous.

Would you have felt better if the stat were more balanced?

Supposing that Brady and Moss had come in after the Phish were stopped for seven times; and the Brady to Moss show came in and in one play scored a 80 yard bomb TDs, two or three times, like 2007. Would you have felt better? Brady would have had 400 yards passing for 4 TDs. Moss would have had 3 catches for 3TDs and 240 yards receiving.

Well that was the equivalent to what happened, 1 play TDs three times. But the names weren't Brady, and Moss. It was unknowns like Tate, Arrington and Chung.

The Dolphins would still have their TOP advantage as they futilely moved the ball for long stretches at a time. The Dolphins would have struggled on Offense to score as they piled up the yardage. Having the ball for most of the time they would have gotten 400 yards too.

Maybe you would have been happier if the INTs weren't by unknowns like Ninkovitch, Ninkovitch, Chung and Page since you preferred Phiffer, Bruschi, Harrison, and Law. Would the blocked kick be better if Samuels did it and Bingo picked it up and returned it?

The fact is that Belichick has always coached his players to keep the play in front of you. Make the other guys march a little bit at a time, surrendering meaningless yardage. Chances are they will screw up; or we will make a good play or three. Or maybe we get a turnover. The net result is they won't score. Historically he is correct. Correct enough to have 5 rings.
