Why the need to trade up??? A Variety of reasons.. Pats wanted him. There are only so many roster spots and maybe the Pats decided that they'd rather only bring in 13 instead of 14.. Pats felt another team would take him before they did.

In selecting North Carolina State center Ted Larsen in the sixth round (205th overall), the Patriots enroll another student to the "Dante Scarnecchia School of Offensive Line Development."

The Patriots have similar players to Larsen already on the roster in Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell and Rich Ohrnberger, so this looks like a pick that will increase competition among that group of center/guards. Another factor to consider is the status of starting center Dan Koppen, who is signed through 2011, so there is a long-term aspect to this move as well.

I liked his other picks but he went off the rails starting in the 5th...he should have traded up for joe webb in the 6th also...

I guess the rb philosophy is that we are so bad at picking them it's better to just take them off the waiver wire or as a FA when they are thought to be washed up but still have a couple miles left in the tank.

I never said there weren't going to sign any UDFAs. All I did was I throw up a variety of reasons.

OH, BTW, while the Pats may sign some UDFA, they had 65 players signed to contracts prior to the draft. They will have added 13 more players.. That leaves 2 spots open for UDFA until they have cut/traded others.. Most of the UDFA won't make it to TC just because of the lack of free spaces on the 80 man roster. .

That's before TC cuts, plus not taking into account the fact that they can sign UDFAs and release them as the draftees sign their contracts and still be under the roster limit.
