I've been thinking about Rick Gosselin having the Pats take Earl Thomas. And the only way I see that happening is if the Patriots were to trade Meriweather. So, what if they did. What if the Pats traded him to a team like the Redskins for their 2nd this year and a 2nd next year. It's the sort of trade that the Pats like to do..

Well the skins do love to piss away their draft picks in fact they already traded away their 2nd this year so that won't work.

I feel slighted (and it was my idea first - see trade thread). :snob:

Been thinking about that also, if he is another Ed Reed or Troy Pom??? maybe, it would make this team a whole lot better..

Have felt all along that BB wants to revolutionalize the Defense, when he drafted Tank Williams thought that was an indicator.. that did not work out.

Have always kept in mind that BB was the one who figured out how to use LT and developed defenses to meet his unique needs..

I know I am way off base, but have been thinking about this for a while..

I haven't seen much of Thomas, if he can tackle I'd be all for it

Wow..... I am glad you made this post.....

I have had a feeling the pats are going to deal Meriweather too.
I would love to see the Pats draft Earl Thomas and trade Meriweather.

Thomas seems like a real playmaker. Somthing we have missed since
Rodney retired and Asanti left for Philadelphia.

Other teams at the top of the 2nd who could use a Safety include the Chiefs, Lions, Buccaneers and Browns..

Sounds like a terrific idea. Trade away your Pro Bowl safety for a guy who could be great or could be the next incarnation of Michael Huff.

Why is it that people use the "PRO BOWL" as an attempt to legitimize a player's status. People have said, time and again, that the "PRO BOWL" is a popularity contest (note the number of snubs to Rodney Harrison).

Meriweather went to the Pro Bowl because of the number of injuries at safety ahead of him..

Also, Jack, someone with your intelligence should know that the Pats would only do this if they felt that Thomas was an upgrade over Meriweather.

I'm aware that the Pro Bowl is largely a popularity contest. I'm only stating that distinction as a pretty measured notch in his favor in response to those who say he's "decent" yet "inconsistent" or whatever.

As for your last point, you could say that about any star player on the roster. I'll go with the known play-making commodity who still has upside over the unproven draft pick. In other years, when there aren't myriad holes in the defense, perhaps that would be a good option.

Very intriguing idea. I have to admit, I loved the Meriweather pick when we made it, but I feel as though he's been a slight dissapointment so far. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice player, but I guess my expectations were a little high. If we view Earl Thomas as a stud safety, I'd be all for it.

There is also the fact Meriweather has two years remaining on his contract, so he's also past the halfway mark of his contract. I think it very unlikely, and overall Meriweather has been a good Safety, but as long as we're going to pick the team apart in theory, it makes more sense to consider players who have actual trade value.

I can't see any team ( well maybe the Raiders or Skins ) trading 2 #2's for BM. I'd do it for that price though I'd need the 1st 2nd to be in this draft. I think Merriweather is a good safety but pretty over rated thanks to his "pro bowl" status, he most likely is gonna be looking for big bucks when his contract is up.

Who mentioned "2 #2's?"

Hmm, in other words Meriweather is bye bye in two years anyway

I don't think it would take a Meriweather trade for the Pats to want Thomas. Unless someone else highly ranked fell, I would have to think Thomas would be the highest rated player on their board at 22.

It's not like a team taking a TE in the 1st when they already have two good ones. How often can they run a 3-TE set? But it's not like we would have trouble getting Thomas on the field, especially with his coverage ability.

Do we desperately need him? No. Would I pass on him at 22? Hell no, and I wouldn't give one thought to making a trade to "make room" for him.
