The big mystery in the Colts' decision to roll over

The big question I have is why Manning looked surprised and disappointed after he was pulled out. Don't you think this kind of a decision was part of the game plan for the Colts? Was Manning seriously not informed beforehand? Or did Caldwell just decide on a whim to roll over like a dog?

I am pretty sure Manning knew about it and did not complain...but was not happy.
Have to give him his due..he is a very competitive guy and I am certain he would have liked to go for the win.
Caldwell's decision is perhaps the most ridiculous decision I have ever observed in the NFL.

There were only 20 minutes more to play. He has made it through 14 and a half games without injury already...

If I were a Colts fan I would be irate

I was wondering the same thing. You would figure they would be on the same page. Only thing I could think of was the game was close and they were afraid the Jets might bring in some blitz that would blow up Manning and their season. Pure cowardice is all I come up wih besides that.

I think Peyton is getting tired of them "resting" him with 2 or 3 weeks to go every year. He is also getting tired of losing in the first round of the playoffs damn near every year.

Here is what gets me confused.....they were down 3 points when they pulled Manning....Jets score on the next play with the rookie QB....put Manning back in and score a quick TD or two to get the game back into the hands of the colts....but they didnt and now are the laughing stock of the NFL....

I think he had a broke jaw back in the early part of the decade. But, hell, what are the chances of him getting really hurt, when their offensive line is permitted to hold all game long? And besides when defenders start getting to him and hitting him, the flags start coming out.

I think the plan was to try to get up to a big lead in the first half with the understanding that the Jets' offense is not a good offense and cannot score quickly. If the Colts had a 2-3 TD lead, they would pull Manning and try to protect the lead. I think since that plan didn't work out and the game was close, Manning probably figured he would play longer until the Colts could get a lead they could protect. When that didn't happen, Manning was livid.

It is all speculation, but I am guessing that is how it played out.

It's just very disappointing to me to see our team tank with the lead. If that's your strategy why even play Manning in the 2nd half at all? Why have the starters go all out last week in Jacksonville on the road?

If they were going to pull the starters, that was probably the worst possible way they could have done it, people paid good money braved a blizzard to see the Colts win and watched Polian/Caldwell tank a game instead

In the post-game press conference, Caldwell said something to the effect of "it was discussed" while Manning says he was told to "be flexible." Given the looks on all the starters' faces and Manning lobbying to get back on the field, it would appear the plan was not as definitive as Caldwell seems to suggest it was.

There were lost of fans on this board that wanted the patriots to rest their starters in 2007 rather than go for the perfect regular season. Those fans thought that the regular season was meaningless and all that mattered was increasing the chances to win the Super Bowl.
