The thing I'll never understand is why Gerard Phelan never got more credit for catching the ball. To me he did the hardest part of the entire play - catching the ball with all those bodies flying around him and arms in front of his face trying to swat at the ball.

Who?

I was sick and tired watching that play growing up every other day and I'm still sick of seeing it. I know it was an exciting play and all but it was pretty much blind luck that it worked out. Any halfwit QB could have heaved the ball blindly in the endzone but Flutie becomes a god because someone was lucky enough to catch it.

I was -4 years old when this happened

I guess it's cool...

I had a little flipbook action book of that play I used to watch over and over again when I was younger. Especially proud being a Natick boy.

Flutie's from Natick?

That might explain why a fairly prominent -- if short -- street there is named "Flutie Pass"

That's one of those events you never forget if you saw it live. Still a thrill to see it.

Actually, I've seen that play hundreds of times, including when it happened, and still pretty awed with the distance it traveled. PTI, just called it the most exciting play ever in college football. Sounds like you have a problem with Flutie.

I love how Brent Mussberger was talking about how Flutie would "Go down to the Downtown Athletic Club, pick up his Heisman Trophy..." well before that historic play. Several dupes think Flutie won the Heisman on that throw, but that play was just the icing on the cake of a runaway Heisman season.

I love how Bernie Kosar was all smiles and getting pats on the back right before that play, then when BC won it, Kosar was shown heading to the tunnel downtrodden.

BC freshman LB Bill Romanowksi had a great game. I believe he had two picks...helped keep the score below 50.

Regards,
Chris

He deserves a whole lot more credit for the play but you gotta give it to Flutie for avoiding the sack in the first place then gunning it downfield into tight coverage to find his receiver- tough to do on any normal play let alone one under pressure in the last seconds of the game.

Gerard was as surprised as any of us, when he ended up with the ball. I guarantee you that.

Flutie avoided future NFL star Jerome Brown (R.I.P.) on that play, then chucked it from his 37 into the endzone for 64 yards in the air...into the wind and rain.

My father called me from work during the 2nd quarter and asked me to record the game because he was listening to it on the radio and wanted to watch what was turning into a classic game. After Phelan made the catch and sent the BC team rushing onto the field, the phone immediately rang and my father said, "Tell me you got that on tape!!!"

Regards,
Chris

Who cares....really?

yeah.

that's why it happens so often. five, six times a week, some guy chucks the ball 65 yards in the air into the arms of the only receiver in the endzone with no time left on the clock at the end of a game.

yeah. that's a really overrated play.

I was a typical New England kid back then and you can trust me that Flutie did not "become a god" on that play. He already was a god. More than one announcer this past weekend called it the greatest college play ever.

Yeah Flutie was a god long before that.

As everyone keeps saying, if he was a couple of inches taller...........

So, how hot is it in Miami? Got any sand in your shorts?

Please.....I've lived here my entire life. I've been following the Boston sports scene since I was five.

That play is the most over hyped play in sports history.

Not to mention what a cry baby Doug Flutie is. I've heard plenty of stories of that guy bashing other QB's when he was on the sidelines in the NFL. Stuff like:

"I would never have thrown that pass" or "If coach would have played me we would have won"

I know someone that was on his team in Buffalo and those were true quotes from 'little Dougy"

Not to mention that drop kick a few years back. I thought Steve Burton was going to orgasm in the post game. I loved the fact that Felger was busting Steve's balls

Doug Flutie

Take out your distain for all-things-Flutie for a moment....

The game itself was easily one of the greatest college football games of all-time. Huge upset vs the defending Nat'l champ. That is what enhanced "The Pass".
