Who is 3rd position receiver?

Aiken has seen the ball more.... and he barely knocks off Tate as the third option IF I HAD TO PICK.

Tate has a lot of upside, but right now, Aiken is a much better receiver.

By "activated" I mean, being put on the 45 gameday roster, so as not to be confused with the other 8 that are "deactivated" each Sunday. Also to distinguish this from the practice squad. Otherwise I would refer to the player as being "on the roster."

By "activated" I mean being on the 53-man roster. A player being on/off the 45-man roster has no bearing on PUP status; to be on the 45-man roster, a player must be on the 53-man roster, which is the terminus of the PUP process.

I do know that anyone's PUP status is invalidated once he touches the practice field. I think the confusion is arising from my impression that after 6 weeks on PUP a player has a 3 week window to either become activated or go straight to IR. Correct?

By activated here, I am taking you to mean "to the 53-man roster." Again, a player can't be on the 45-man gameday "active" roster without being on the 53-man roster, which he can't be on if he's in any stage of PUP, therefore that point is moot.

However, your impression is still incorrect. A player has three weeks after Week 6 to begin practicing, which does NOT mean he goes on the 53-man roster (and so obviously he's not going to be "active" for a game). If those three weeks expire without him beginning to practice, then he goes on "IR" (technically it's still Reserve/PUP, not Reserve/Injured).

IF that player then starts practicing within that Weeks 6-9 window, then he has another three weeks (6-9, 7-10, 8-11, or 9-12) to be activated to the 53-man roster. If those three weeks expire without him being activated to the 53-man roster, then goes on "IR."

As to the point about "stepping on the practice field invalidating PUP status," that is only in regards to being placed on PUP in the first place. If a player practices/plays at any point in training camp, preseason, regular season, or postseason, then he is ineligible to be placed on Reserve/PUP. However, practicing is a stage of coming off the PUP list, therefore it doesn't inherently invalidate the player who is already on PUP. It is still entirely possible for a player to start practicing post-Week 6, practice throughout his 3-week window as a Reserve/PUP member (not a 53-man roster member, not a roster exemption member = can't play in a game until he goes on 53) and still have that 3-week period expire and go back to Reserve/PUP ("IR") for the remainder of the season.

Thanks for the clarification.

Option 1 and 2 are obviously Moss and Welker.

WHO IS OUR THIRD OPTION AS A RECEIVER
Is this the question? If so, the answer is Watson, then Aiken, then Fauk.

Synovia.... you did not read my post then.

I have put it in BOLD now

we really do not have a true "3rd" WR.

We have multiple "3rd" WR's currently

Since this thread has nothing to do w/ ability, upside, potential and age....

Aiken is 3

The problem is your post is wrong.

This thread/choice has everything to do with ABILITY, and right now, Aiken has more of it.

Aiken is #3 and the more he performs, the more Brady will look his way. He's certainly not done anything to sour Tom on him thus far.

He's a YAC guy, but he's showing good ability to use his body to draw PI calls as well.

If he stays healthy (another Aiken upside) I doubt anyone steals his spot as the primary #3 option (if that makes sense).

This team has a lot of sure-handed options this year and I think that plays in favour of a pass-happy team who need to be able to keep DC's guessing as the year wears on.

With Tate not practicing due to another ding, I wonder if we'll see him get sent to IR for this year. We're sitting on a LOT of roster spots right now. I hope we can expect at least one pleasant surprise in the form of a return to action this week.

There ya go. Looks like Edelman is practicing today. I am not totally sold on Aiken. At least we have another option other than the RBs and TEs.

Aiken and Edelman are night and day, though. I think Edelman is scary and if we get to 4-wide with Welker and Edelman, bombin!

That said, if I only see 3-wide, hopefully Welker and Edelman aren't on the field at the same time.

They've run Edelman + Welker out as a two-receiver set, you know. . . .

Aiken as a 3rd receiver- agreed.

Aiken as a 5th, maybe 4th- hes fine.

Id rather have a good versatile receiver, but some combination of Edelman Aiken and Tate could work.

They are really different types. Aiken, solid, Edelman crafty and Tate athletic. Problem is, of course, one guy getting in that rhythm with Brady. If anyone could find a regular rotation by role, BB could, but it's difficult.

Not to live in the past, but i think the talented and versatile Gaffney wasn't appreciated until gone.

How much did Gaffney get from Denver?

I'm not saying you couldn't find a similar receiver. Problem is, we didn't. An over the hill speed receiver who shies from contact isn't what we needed.

Personally I'm glad we have Aiken, a ST captain and one who reminds me of Givens in his YAC capabilities, Edelperson, a WWW neophyte, and speedy Tate (though "Made of Glass") with KR capabilities on the roster instead. I was a big Gaffer fan but it seemed that he'd maxed out his potential here. Time to look for gold among the younguns.
