Mangini: Browns have "remarkable similarities" to Patriots
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 9, 2009 4:49 PM ET

Browns coach Eric Mangini wants the chance to turn around Cleveland's franchise. All he needs is just a little patience. (Cue the whistling.)

"I just know when we first came into New England, they'd come off an 8-8 season, and there had to be a lot of transition,'' Mangini told the Boston Globe during Cleveland's bye week. "It was top-heavy financially, there were tough decisions that had to be made, and we didn't have much success that first year. There are remarkable similarities between the situations."

Browns owner Randy Lerner is reportedly looking for a football czar -- an executive that may not give Mangini the time he says he needs.

"I don't think we won any popularity contests there," Mangini said, speaking about Bill Belichick's first year with the Patriots. "You can look at the clips. The other thing is that with the staff we had, the approach we had, we kept getting better, but it took a while. At one point in that second year, we were 1-3, but we didn't change the approach, and then we went on a streak.

"That wasn't a function of getting hot. It was a function of two years of work. You don't know when that moment will strike, but they've been rolling since.''

There are a lot of differences we could point out -- the 2000 Patriots weren't 31st in offense and 32nd in defense -- but the key one is that Patriots owner Robert Kraft believed in the leadership structure in place. That structure started with coach Bill Belichick, and his VP of player personnel Scott Pioli, who enjoyed a close relationship by all accounts.

Mangini's hand-picked G.M. George Kokinis was just fired removed from the building. And this new czar is likely to have his own ideas about how to fix the franchise. Mangini says he welcomes help.

"The distribution of power and responsibility, that's not important," Mangini said. "Trying to get the right answer is. Everyone here's working towards that. It's not about power."

I agree, the Browns are very similar to the Patriots - the 1983 version.

We? WE??? Mangini acts as if it were he making the management decisions in NE in 2000.

This is probably how Mangini conned his way into two HC jobs - constantly bringing up Belichick and the Pats.

The biggest problem with his parallel (which is reasonable except for who is saying it), is that even when he was with the Pats he sucked as a coach.

Mangini was one of the worst coordinators of the Belichick era. He was so bad that Belichick, who gives a LONG leash to his guys, stripped Mangini of his play calling duties.

mmmm....similarities between Mangini's Browns and the New England Patriots...mmmm....still thinking....

well, "Browns" has an "r" and and "n" and and "s", just like the New England Patriots...so, yeah, remarkable similarities...how did i miss that...the Rat is right again!

When have the Pats ever had an 8-8 record under Belichick? You'd think that since he was a coach here he'd at least be able to remember how many games his team won. I assume he's talking about the 9-7 season in 2002, but damn...

This says it all about Mangini and his opinions: ProFootballWeekly.com - Mangini unlikely to survive Browns' disarray

Mangini is a dead man walking," one team insider told PFW. "It will never work for him. His ego is too big not to have power, but he does not know how to handle power. There's no way he can make it work. The owner has a lot of information on the problems."

Added an NFL scout with firsthand knowledge of the team's situation: "Everyone is in the dark. Everyone is scared for their jobs. No one wants to talk or is saying anything."

A common complaint we're hearing about Mangini is that he cannot handle more responsibility but continues to try to do everything himself because he does not trust anyone. As a result, he is outsmarting himself.

"His communication skills are awful," said one insider. "He is not a leader. And he is not a likeable guy. It's a very bad combination for a head coach or general manager."

As for his opinions on the Pats? I'll go with this:
Eric is an ass," said one high-level NFL executive.

lol... nice one!

Mangini is one of those guys who should have been working at Enron. He clearly has no concept of anything other than personal gain and power. Nothing like trying to use as leverage that you used to work for a team that will no longer allow you to be within 15 miles of their stadium, for fear of your own safety. It's funny how he acts like he was one of the big minds responsible for building the dynasty. He did laundry for Parcells and Belichick.

I hope he stays on board for one more year. If I'm not mistaken, we play Cleveland. Just one final beatdown from the master to his ungrateful student.

Im embarrassed for Mangini that he's still riding the NE coat tails and piggybacking BB's success like he still is. As if this team's success had anything at all to do with that friggin' tomato can. Cleveland cant fire that guy fast enough.

Haven't we all known somebody like this? The type who tries like mad to model himself on someone who's successful or popular, but mistakes style for substance?

One sign of this is taking the role model's surface characteristics and exaggerating them: "Aha, Bill plays things close to the vest, so I'll be downright secretive. Ooh, Bill got rid of high-priced veterans, so I'll jettison any player a casual fan has ever heard of! Look, Bill is a hard-ass so I'll be an actual jerk!!"

For a contrast, watch Josh McDaniels. His personal demeanor and his relationship to his players seems very different from Belichick's, but his approach to building a football team is much more similar. He understands which parts are important and which are just BB's personal quirks.

Very well put.

He's talking about the last year of the Carroll era, when the team started 4-0 and finished 8-8 prompting the Belichick hiring.

Josh McDaniels also received a an outline about the little known, important keys to being a head coach, written by BB during the short break after the superbowl loss in 07. BB spent time each week during the next season, hitting each topic, and mentoring Josh in the many aspects of head coaching that he wouldn't have experienced as a coordinator. Essentially, Josh McDaniels received a torch. This makes me thinik BB hangs it up at the end of his current contract.

Mangini's name shouldn't be spoken in the same sentence as our beloved coach's. Rot in hell you pathetic little weasel.... the sooner you're out of football, the better.

Awesome point! I wish I could have had that revelation myself. BB's success has little to do with his personality despite the "personality cult" that has developed from him. It doesn't matter if you're extroverted or extroverted, whether you show or hide emotion. Belichick wins because understands game planning as well as anyone who has ever coached, understands how to motivate a team, knows which players will fit in with his system (and when to cut his losses and acknowledge a mistake), and instills an attitude that every game is the biggest game of the season.

No one would be complaining about Eric Mangini if his team was 7-1 rather than 1-7. Mangini is obsessed on imitating the perceived worst part of Belichick's character without having any trust from his players.

Mangini's obsessions border on the bizarre imo, I think he's losing his mind. BB's SO in his head it's ruining him. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy either

Just curious and dont feel like looking it up, but what was Mangina's title back then?

The manwhore was secretly stealing all things Patriots so that someday Hollywood and the entire media would be ablaze with the rags to iches saga of the ball boy .... who would be king.

Gotta give it up to the pr!ck ... he's made a few million out of the scam. Luckily ... he's just the head coach of the Browns and not someone who really matters in this country.

Mangini...Story of the Fat Ball Boy made good...on the coattails of another.

LMAO
