My guess is he meant the Patriots would of won SB 41 if they didnt choke (no offense guys) vs the Colts in the AFC Championship Game.

He didnt mean the 1994-95 season. In the sentence he was referring back to the 2006-07 season.

No such thing as "choking" in sports

Really? Ive never heard that before.

What would you call being up 21-3 in the AFC Championship Game and losing?

I call that choking. What do you call it?

p.s. nice idea changing your post after you misread my post.

SAINTS No brainer for me, Love to see the Saints win it all

LIONS Gotta pull for a team this bad, this long.....

BROWNS Once they dump Mangini I will be rooting for them big.

BENGALS They seem to be trying to clean up the thug factor. Best helmets and uniforms in the NFL

VIKINGS Once Lord Fart-ve is gone they will move up for me in desire to see them win at dern SB

I don't know if I'd call that 'choking', but the definition of the word seems to have changed in the minds of some over the years.

Originally the concept of choking was just that; you tensed up so badly under pressure you couldn't handle the situation, and you performed poorly. The all-time classic example would be the 1986 Red Sox; not Bill Buckner, but the others prior to that play (Calvin Schiraldi, Bob Stanley, Rich Gedman); in my opinion those guys gagged. I don't know that I can point to any Patriots in that AFCCG as choking and not being able to handle the pressure.

Now choking seems to mean something different in the verbage of some; now it's simply synonomous with the favored team not winning, or in this case, the team that is leading not winning. I guess if that's your definition of choking then there's no denying the Pats had the lead but did not win, but personally I wouldn't label what happened in that game as choking.

Oh no- lol I shouldve explained I apologize.

It's just that the 94 super bowl was the first I ever watched and the 06 sb was the first I missed. That's all- go pats

The whole country is aware of Nate Davis. Wasn't Letterman constantly going on about him while they were unbeaten last year.

I think he will do well though.

Does the whole country know? I don't think so. If you're right, well then I'm happy.

I am currently a student at Ball State, so I really don't know how the rest of the country takes to Letterman and the 08 undefeated Cardinals. But if you say the country knows, I'll take your word for it. How about I rephrase?:

hey you guys all know Nate Davis right? Yeah well he's awesome!

Really? I think many examples suggest the contrary...

Do you think teams are legitimately bad enough and deserve to give up 7 run innings or lose in the 4th quarter when leading by 26?

Correct. Thank you for the clarification.

The pats have indeed lost 4 super bowls: 85, 97, 06, 07

While I agree with your notion that there is indeed choking in sports, I COMPLETELY disagree with your example.

colts score a field goal right before half (21-6 at half) that score was not "choking" to give up.

colts get ball to start half and score a td, also not choking by the pats.

Now it's 21-13, a one score game with the majority of the third quarter and all of the fourth remaining. To say that losing that is choking is ridiculous. Espn might have said that but they, like most media, love to hate the pats. Don't always listen to what the tv tells you.

Unless you think that giving up the 3 before half and the td to start a half is "choking", this game cannot be considered as such. It's a fact that losing a one-score lead with almost entire half left is not choking.

So please good sir, never mutter those words again. Ever!

There are different meanings of "choking" by a team or player imo.

- You can choke if while under a certain amount of pressure you just breakdown.
- You can choke if you are favored by 10 or more points and lose.
- You can choke if you have a huge lead and collapse.

These to me are all examples of a team "choking". Maybe some people think the word means something else. I think a team or player can choke on alot of different levels depending on the situation.

No problem dude. Anytime. :eat3:

Well you bring up a good point. The Patriots didnt choke by the way the Colts cameback. It wasnt like in the game the Pats just gave up a string of touchdowns and collapsed.

I used the word choke just to sum up how a team that had won 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls lost after being up 21-3 in the AFC Championship Game.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I disagree on the last two. The reason for that is that the definition of "choking" implies that the team or player couldn't handle the pressure; i.e., they tensed up so badly they could not breath (choked).

If you are favored and lose, or are winning and lose, there are many other possible explanations other than not being able to handle the pressure. Aside from things like fluke plays, injuries, or bad calls, one important thing that is being totally overlooked is the opponent.

An example of this would be the 1980 Miracle on Ice. The Soviet Union team didn't really do anything wrong; they didn't succumb to pressure and choke; Team USA simply played a great game and won. Sometimes a team loses regardless of how well they played, and sometimed underdogs defeat favorites. It's not always a case of somebody being at fault (i.e., 'choking') for the loss; sometimes the other player or other team simply played better.

In my opinion the term 'choking' has become nothing more than a term with which fans of one team to try to taunt fans of another team. I'd put it side by side with fans who point their fingers and laugh at a team who loses a championship game. This is nothing new; it's been going on in the NFL at least since the Vikings lost a few early Super Bowls. Somehow or other being second best has transformed into being worse than the 10th or 20th best teams in the twisted logic of many fans and media members over the years.

When you stop and think about it, it makes absolutley no sense at all - other than to either make some fan who already feels bad worse, or to build your own self-esteem by tearing down someone else. And that, in a nutshell, is how the term 'choking' is used by many people now: it's simply a word used to put others down, so the person who uses it can feel better about themselves; it usually has nothing to do with what actually happened on the field of play.

Always liked the Bills
Used to like SD before LT, Merriman and Rivers era
Don't hate Denver anymore with Josh there
Root for pathetic KC with Cassie & Vrabes

I grew up near Cincinnati and was a Bengal fan growing up. I migrated to the Patriots since in the days before Sunday Ticket it was virtually impossible to follow a truly bad team in another market. Not only were their games not on, their highlights were not even shown.

I started becoming a New England fan with the arrival of Parcells and it grew on me. If they play the Bengals there is no conflict- it's Patriots all the way.

But a small part of me wants to see the Bengals become relevant and win games so long as those wins don't negatively affect the Patriots.

A few years back I moved to the Miami market, but there will be no future adjustments in NFL football allegiance.

I generally agree with your list.

As with almost all here, I have no real 2nd FAVORITE team, although there are lots of New Englanders who grew up as giant fans.

However, I do NOT hate our competitors. I guess I don't understand hating the other great franchises of the last decade and likely for the next.

The teams I like and respect are primarily our competitors. I leave my hate for teams like the dolphins, the broncos and the jets (teams that have really screwed with us over the years).

TEAMS I RESPECT AND WHO I WISH SUCCESS (when they aren't playing us)
colts
steelers
giants
bills (although non-competitive for years, games with us are always enjoyable)

My top 4 favorite

1. Patriots
2. Steelers
3. Colts
4. Giants

49ers QB of the future = former BALL STATE qb Nate Davis. remember the name
