Re: matt light and few thoughts on tonights performances

Light was fine.
Man, give it up. Light was horrible. If you want to say he will be fine going forward, great, but he wasn't fine last night.

Re: matt light and few thoughts on tonights performances

About the only thing you have quicker than Light is your mouth. Aaron Schoebel is one of the best DEs in the league. And he's always given Light fits. But he gives all LTs fits. Scoebel had one sack tonight. WOW.. whooppeee.. Can Light be blamed for the interception? No, because he kept Schoebel off Brady to begin with. and the throw by Brady was ill-advised since the HB was covered anyways. This was a time when Brady should have thrown it away..

Seriously.. Do you even understand that the Tackles taking players wide is what they are supposed to do?

I believe it was Gruden that said it was Lights job to cut Schoebel on that play but he didn't get his job done so it lead directly to the interception. Not that it was totally Lights fault but Schoebel wasn't supposed to be there. I wouldn't put it all on Light though since the defender made an incredible play.

As for Vollmer, didn't sub in for light for a series? The announcers mentioned him being in there but I couldn't confirm it by seeing the number. I did however a much stouter pocket on that seires.

For the most part Light had a sub par night, as he usually does against Schoebel. He didn't give up much in sacks but the pocket was being regularly collapsed on that side. Hopefully it will improve.

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

I thought it was Todd Light. And I think the Pats need to draft an understudy/future replacement for Todd next year.

Re: matt light and few thoughts on tonights performances

Would advise two things:

The game will be on NFL replay. Compare the first half to the second half. Did TB even have a finger laid on him in the second half?

There was considerable pressure in the first half. However, the majority of the hits came in the 5-7 second range. I counted every play. With vintage TB, the ball is either out or he would be flowing in the pocket.

Re: My postgame thoughts

first of all, thanks for the long rundown above. a lot of work and very helpful. i'm going to go through it in more detail later this morning. thanks again.

But, "typical stuff" on special teams? The tackle, strip and fumble recovery gave Brady the chance to win the game. I disagree!

Our special teams have always been very reliable and good under Bill Belichick. They were reliable again last night. That's more or less what I meant.

Re: matt light and few thoughts on tonights performances

What he said.

Damn dude, no offense to you, but there's really no reason to get so worked up about things--and absolutely no reason to call someone an 'idiot' etc. Just because he had a different opinion or view on things isn't a good reason to call someone out.

We're kind of a tight group around here, and we all share a common interest. For the most part, you are amongst friends, so relax and scout our next pro bowl LT in the meantime

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

Light looked a lot better in the second half. In the first, he was horrible. Yeah, the line gave up one sack, but Brady was hit 8 times in the first half. Sacks or not, those hits are going to take their toll. Light must have taken a dump at halftime or something because he looked a lot lighter on his feet in the second half (no pun intended).

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

Big test coming for our O-Line next week VS the Jets. The Jets blitzed on almost every play last week in Houston, and I have to admit they looked great, especially Bart Scott.

I wish them luck, but am skeptical about this O-Line.

We're going to get creamed if this line plays the way it did in the first half.

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

Matt light was absolutely horrible. That Buffalo d-line is not even close to the best pass rush in the lead and still practically every snap that left side got pushed backwards. Only when Brady began throwing no huddle and really fast, they didn't have enough time to get to tom. I thought the right side actually did a pretty decent job. aside from one sack i didn't see any pressure on tom.

Schobel has always owned Light.... no exception last night. Brady was real tentative which did not help. ....... and let's face it, he had 52 attempts and only 1 sack. That's not a bad number.

Probably looked worse then the stat line shows, but I think that you can say that about just about everyone last night. Except the back half of the D. They played stellar.

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

We ran what 70 plays and matt was taken less than 5 times... so we need to upgrade wow

brady had 70 snaps and i am sure he was bad for more than 5 snaps
actually i can moss , wes and every player in the list.

Those were my thoughts initially especially considering that Ryan and Scott want to pay us back.

But I think we will show a far better performance against the Jets. Brady is still rusty but the game tape last night should motivate our offense that we are nowhere close to the elite level that we are supposed to be.

Re: Thoughts on the Game

Sure, McKelvin's poor decision helped. But on the other side of the ball, a couple of huge and suspect roughing penalties and a slew of uncharacteristic dropped passes helped the Bills. There are always things that "help" both sides. (And it's not like McKelvin just dropped that ball.)

No question. But this wasn't just any game.

This was the game where your quarterback on offense is playing for the first time in a year and it takes him a few quarters to find his touch and his rhythm -- and your quarterback on defense is injured early and out of the game, leaving a couple of guys who have never worn a green dot in their lives to scramble around and piece things together.

I went to bed not long after my OP, and have just read through everyone's comments. So let me clarify a few things:

1. As I mentioned, I missed the first half of the game. I'm glad I did, from other's comments. It sounds like we stunk, and that's obviously not a good thing. I'm not trying to whitewash bad performances by the OL, the DL, and TB. We have a lot of work to do, no doubt about it.

2. With that in mind, I think this kind of win is much better for this time at this point in time than a blowout. The rust showed early on, and it seemed it took getting our backs up against a wall to finally get this team to do a gut check and come out firing on all cylinders the last 5 minutes of the game.

3. Yes, we won't beat the Steelers playing like we did tonight. Though we might have beaten the Steelers who showed up last Thursday night. They didn't look very good either. But they still came out with a win, as did Indy, as did we. Good teams win when they play badly. We needed that.

4. My expectations for the defense were not that high going into the game. Given that Seymour's trade was a distraction all week and the DL will take a game or 2 to adjust to his loss, and the unexpected loss of Mayo early in the game, I thought the defense did ok overall, at least in the 2nd half.

5. Everyone expected the offense to come out firing like vintage 2007. But we didn't look that great in the preseason, and up to the last 2 possessions the offense looked poor (poor is actually being kind) tonight. Brady looked tentative, the OL was poor, the offensive playcalling was bad, we gave up on the running game too soon, and we need productivity from more than 2 WRs. Missed 3rd downs, 4th downs, and 2 point conversions, with sloppy looking play. BUT the last 2 serious looked like vintage Brady and vintage Pats, Watson played his best game as a Pat, and the line seemed to play better.

Bottom line is I'm not whitewashing the fact that we played more poorly than expected and have a ton of work to do, but I think that pulling out this kind of win may be better for the team in the long run than a dominant opening statement. We lost 31-0 to open 2003 and became a stiffling defense and clutch offensive team that won the SB. We started 2007 as the most dominant team in history but couldn't finish.

Re: My postgame thoughts

One thing about all the athleticism and youth on defense. You saw Butler make an unworldly dive to knock a ball away, almost intercepting it. We got to see the much-hyped athleticism this kid possesses. We have to remember that this is why we went young, because of the speed and leaping ability of Butler. But you know he's a rookie and he's going to make mistakes, he's going to get burned. But not many players could have knocked that ball away on Edwards' rollout.

Re: Thoughts on the Game

Sure, McKelvin's poor decision helped.
McKelvin actually had a good reason to bring it out, with 2:06 left he could have brought it down to the 2 minute warning and cost the Patriots a timeout vs. a touchback which would have given us a free timeout at the 2 minute warning.

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

I am sorry but Matt Light look liked a turnstile during the 1st half. I understand he doesn't match up well against Schobel however, he didn't match up well against the Gaints in the Super Bowl either.

Re: Matt Light and a few thoughts on tonight's performance

light is guna be a problem this year for us, you guys can obviously c that(slow feet!)..sooo washed up and kaczur played a lil better than normal but nuthin great...my man guyton wasnt great tonight either..hopefully jerod is only out a few days..secondary looked solid as i expected..brady a bit off and watson definitely redeemed himself at the very end...randy moss, love him but needs to finish blocks on running plays, but did enjoy his passion, and slight leadership..vollmer did well and played soon as i assumed he should..gotta love our safeties, all four of them, they are vicious, smart, hitting dudes...okay enuf of the criticism, heart attack type game but fantastic finish!!

I don't think anyone would claim Light played a great game or anything, but is this not a little bit jumping the gun? It's one game.

Re: Thoughts on the Game

I watched the replay on ESPN Sportscenter after you mentioned this about Sanders and you are wrong. That was not Sanders jumping around. That was Pat Chung (#25) at the top of the screen. Sanders (#36) was at the bottom of the screen, to the right of Gostkowski and digging in the pile.

Right call on your part, just the wrong player.. And I'm sure that Belichick will ream Chung a new one for it.

Good correction. I was going by memory.

Very true. Suppose he took a knee, the Pats managed to use a timeout and make Buffalo run two plays before the 2 minute warning, then Buffalo went 3 and out and handed the Pats the ball back with over a minute left and 2 timeouts remaining. The announcers could have been talking about McKelvin's lack of situational awareness costing his team. (Plus when they bashed him for not just going down when the tacklers arrived -- hello, Mr. Meriweather was holding him up.)

Bills DL were running out of gas and Todd apparently got some technique advice from Matt in the locker room 'cause he used his hands a lot better in the second half. I think Brady hit the nail on the head too when he said we didn't make adjustments so much as they just started to play and execute better more consistently. The entire team (oddly other than Maroney) came out tentative against yet another team playing in their superbowl. Jauron was actually admonished by his grumudgeon owner prior to this game to not coach afraid and just go for it. They did. Hopefully we didn't dampen their spirits too severely since I'd like to see them give the JETS and Miami similar fits the rest of the season.

Although the clock on the TO meltdown is surely ticking after last night.
