For the second year, McMichael is returning to Middle Georgia with a crew of his current and former teammates for the celebrity weekend.

On Saturday, July 14, a free youth camp at South Peach Park in Fort Valley will be held for the first 150 children between 7 and 14 years old to register. Registration is at 9 a.m.

The camp is funded by an NFL grant and refreshments will be provided by Gatorade.

Celebrities scheduled to coach the youngsters include Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown of Cartersville, wide receiver Kelly Campbell, a former Georgia Tech standout, and linebacker Channing Crowder of Atlanta, according to a McMichael Foundation news release.

Former University of Georgia players scheduled to attend include New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson and fullback Patrick Pass, Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, Atlanta Falcons quarterback D.J. Shockley, Arizona Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope, New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Verron Haynes.

Healthy Pennington refining skills for 2007 season
-----
So this offseason marks the first time since summer 2004 that he has been able to train properly rather than just rehabbing. As a result, he's added some muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame, if not additional weight above his 225 pounds.

Pennington has two other factors in his favor as he heads into his eighth NFL season and sixth as the Jets' No. 1 quarterback.

First, this is the team's second year under offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, so as Pennington said, he's trying to learn the finer details of the offensive system - not the system itself.

Second, this marks Brian Daboll's first season as quarterbacks coach after Schottenheimer had that added responsibility last season.
-----
"Coach Daboll always seems one step ahead of you as far as preparation," Pennington said. "Whether it's another piece of game film he wants you to look at or another handout, he can preach those details to you where you can use him as a resource."

Lacrosse, and not football, seems to be the first sport of the Belichick family. The middle Belichick child, Rivers and Northfield Mount Hermon grad Steve Belichick, has received a scholarship to play the game for Rutgers’ well-regarded program next year. And on top of that, Bill Belichick himself, in case you missed it, has often said he was a better lax player than football player, and captained the team at Wesleyan as a senior.
H'mmm Rutgers' Head Coach Greg Schiano was at mini-camp too...I guess draftnicks need to keep an eye on Rutgers for the 2008 draft.

"Probably more than anything, it's reinforcement," Boston College defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani said Friday morning. "What we do, at our level, is teach. And then you see those guys, on that level, and they're still teaching, finding ways to motivate guys who are making millions of dollars. That's one of the things you notice about the Patriots' staff -- they're teachers."

Wayne Jones always has been one of the biggest players on the field throughout his scholastic football career.

This past week, the Bishop McCort all-state defensive lineman had an opportunity to see exactly how he measured up against some of the top talent in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Jones played in Saturday night’s 50th Big 33 Football Classic at Hersheypark Stadium as part of the Pennsylvania all-star squad that faced its Ohio counterparts.
-----
Jones upheld a family tradition in Saturday’s game. His older brothers – New England Patriots defensive back Artrell Hawkins (1994 Big 33 Classic) and University of Toledo receiver Andrew Hawkins (2004 PSFCA East-West All Star Game) – each appeared in major all-star games.

“They’ve got quite a run going,” Salem said.

The significance of his presence on the Pennsylvania roster wasn’t lost upon Jones.

“It means a lot to me because both of my brothers played in big all-star games,” he said. “Knowing that Artrell has been in the NFL for 11 years and Andrew is going into his senior year, to be in that same class makes you feel great.”

Update on Concussions & the NFL: Medicine fast framing theories with hard data

In the wake of Andre Waters' suicide, Ted Johnson's depression plus early-onset Alzheimer's and new league-wide measures announced one month ago, the NFL will gather together administrators, medical committee members, team doctors and trainers along with invited lecturers for a summit in Chicago Tuesday on the controversial subject of concussions.

If I recall correctly the NFL sent out speakers to all clubs pointing out that ill fitting helmets contributed to the frequency of concussions.

One of the suggestions was that hair cuts or lack of them made it difficult to fit the helmet correctly. With the big mops of hair some players sport , i am not surprised.

I'm surprised that the players have apparently ignored the simple advice to cut their hair short and get their helmets fit properly. Especially when so many players are cheating on Steroids to get a little illegal edge. Why miss this possibility to get an edge?

But that seems to be the case. I can see why the coaches don't want to be criticizing hair length, but the team leaders, among the players should be leading on this issue. Jeopardizing a career or your health is just plain stupid for simple vanity reasons.
