The rumors about teams being annoyed with the Colts, if more than a rumor, supports that this is a common practice throughout the league, though, it would appear that is already confirmed.
It also makes me wonder if Irsay more than Manning or Polian were the driving forces in prior rule changes. That organization has no issue whining when they feel something is wrong. They're always at the front of the line. It seems that much of the NFL keeps their mouths shuts about the dirty dirty that goes on behind the scenes.
^ with that said, I'm not saying we should get away with cheating if we did, but we currently seem to have an infinite amount of "professional" backers where the only ones crucifying us are media members.
This "deflategate" will now bring it into the spotlight forcing stricter regulations. Which is good for integrity but probably bad for the game itself.
I see it two ways, allow everyone to play with their preferred footballs so both teams get the "advantage" or force everyone to play with the same football so there is no advantage unless a player lucks into preferring that specification.
How big of a deal is it really? If everyone is playing with balls that they want then you can't complain about the ball your opponent is using. You have your preference. It also removes questionable integrity and prevents this from being an issue again, which would allow the league to never suffer another blemish from the situation.
