Unless there's a HUGE value that they legitimately find somewhere else, I won't second guess, but I feel if it's a close decision and it comes down to a financial concern I say fkn splurge and get the best player you can get at #7, maybe an offensive tackle or the best linebacker available.

Anyone agree? Screw trying to save the money and develop a youngster with potential, we need something NOW, someone with that ability already to further coach and have him ready to contribute by opening week. Maybe another stud for the offensive line is the way to go.

Vernon Gholston could be a pass rushing beast for us. Imagine the impact of a top 10 pick on this team, the right top 10 pick. Like a Patrick Willis.

Trade the pick to Dallas for a player and their two number ones.

If only man. They will only blow their wad if they can get McFadden.

Personally, I want us to trade the pick even more now. We have several holes on our defense that need to be addressed immediately and/or at the very least by the end of next offseason. I don't know if taking someone at the seventh pick especially if the Pats aren't in love with anyone there is the smart thing to do.

The Pats may have the potential only to move down a few spots and pick up another high draft pick in this year's draft. The Pats maybe better off dropping down out of the top ten to the top 15 and picking up another second round pick. The quality of the player will probably not be all that much less, the Pats can add another potential starter with the second round pick, and save a lot of cap space.

The Pats have done well getting impact starters in the middle to late first round. I don't know if a top 10 pick unless they see the next Richard Seymour type top 10 pick is going to benefit us as much as trading down. Drafting in the top 10 isn't always a good thing if there is no one available when you pick that you are totally in love with.

If McFadden is available with the seventh pick, I hope that Belichick and Pioli would only settle for the Cowboys' two first rounders. There should be at least another high pick or a decent player involved.

unfortunately i dont know if there are any patrick willis-impact type players in the draft this yr at seven or later

its pretty obvious though that our first pick will either be a ot, lb, or db

Someone explain to me why the Cowboys would want McFadden anyway? They've got Marion Barber III, and Julius Jones. Barber III + McFadden would be a sick overload of a combo, but how can they afford that?

Sometimes I wish we'd get a little reckless and roll the dice on somebody. The wallet must be opened, there's no way around it, yeah get guys as low as you can for cap room and develop them more, but at some point I think you need to go after a more high profile, already-at-a-pro-type-level player and see what he can bring to the table, even if it means paying a few million more than you would like.

Both Barber and Jones are free agents. Barber is a RFA, but Jones is an UFA and not likely to resign with the Cowboys because he wants to start. McFadden comes from Jones' alma mater.

McFadden is a nice shiny Ferrarri and prior to Parcells, Jones liked to go for those nice shiny Ferraris that look great until you get your first maintainence bill. He is the guy who drafted Quincy Carter about four rounds too early because he was flashy. He signed TO against Parcells' wishes and he has been a mixed blessing at best.

The only time that Jerry Jones has made good personnel moves is when Parcells or Jimmy Johnson have been the head coach. He had gone about a decade between the two coaches making some of the dumbest moves ever.

All I'm saying is, and I don't want to get ahead of myself here and realize that I'm just still very raw about Sunday, but at some point when you can keep failing to execute when it matters most perhaps you need to slightly modify your drafting and scouting tendencies. We already extracted heaps of value, not to mention paid Brady around $30m less than other teams would've, so maybe it's time to realize that a couple of maybe overpriced studs are just what we need to provide that extra spark down the stretch...

problem is we need help at:
right tackle (kaczur isnt even young-worked on a ranch or whatever)
cb (asante is prob gone and not much depth)
safety (rodney is soon to retire, and sanders is just solid, nothing spectacular)
linebacker (jury out on adalius, vrabel is very good but disappears at times, bru and seau are obviously on there last leg, what's going to happen with colvin)

with meriweather here we can wait on safety til the later rounds or next yr
however, linebacker and cb are both immediate needs, unless of course we re-sign asante

agree with your whole post. problem is, if it goes down in that order then chances are we're not getting immediate help at the RT position. maybe someone in the later later rounds that they find value in, but nobody that would figure to be a dominant force without a couple years development. it's not like we'll be getting Joe Thomas.

What may actually turn out to be a good move is paying Asante. His agent has to realize his value went down in the playoffs, and if that's the case, it's probably in his best interest to remain a Patriot and try to help get back to the big game, because if the differential is maybe just 1 million I think he'll stay. And if we pay him, we dont have to worry about signing a replacement and can maybe accelerate our selection of some OT help.

Way to early. There's FA and trades. Who knows, maybe not winning the SB will get the Pats more action with other teams in the off season.

It certainly helped last season. Anyone worried about our team dropping off shouldn't be. If there was a time to panic it would have been at the end of the 05 season when we lost all of those core guys from the super bowl teams. The transition won't have to be half as drastic this year. The linebacking core needs attention, but half of that attention involves telling Bruschi and Seau to hang em up. Once their salaries aren't an issue we procede to replace them. Let's not forget that Bill has made this team with Pioli, and they know what they're doing even if we think we're smarter.

simple math...the more money spent on a high, unproven 1st round pick, the less money to spend to try and retain your own free agents and go after other teams free agents.
