Looks like it will be either Rattay or Simms coming to to back up Cassel and may take over if Cassel falters. Who is the better option?
Predraft writeups:
Louisiana Tech’s Tim Rattay is a lot like Purdue’s Drew Brees but does not throw the ball with as much velocity down the field. Rattay is not tall and lacks arm strength, but he has great instincts and feel and plays in a very QB-friendly, multiple-WR offense that is kind of an offshoot of the run-and-shoot and puts up remarkable numbers. Rattay keeps the chains moving and puts points on the board.
Seems primed to live up to monumental hype that plagued him as a college quarterback. Is a relentless worker and tireless viewer of film. Understands and plans to improve weaknesses. Has all the tools but is not instinctual. Seems to lock in and focus in the red zone. Cannot question his intelligence. Throws a nice deep ball but lacks great arm strength. Mechanics are far from perfect and his lower-half stiffness doesn’t always agree with throwing motion. Deliberate motion is flawed by a high release point and long stride. Ball doesn’t come out on third or fifth step every time, which indicates rhythm isn’t what it should be and forces some throws behind his receivers. Played with great WR corps at Texas and might struggle with a less-talented supporting cast. Has tendency to overrate his arm strength. Good touch on intermediate-range throws and passes to backs. Despite slow 40 time, can make plays with his feet. Was not clutch in big games at Texas.
Neither have great stats:
Simms
Rattay
