Looks like it will be either Rattay or Simms coming to to back up Cassel and may take over if Cassel falters. Who is the better option?

Predraft writeups:
Louisiana Tech’s Tim Rattay is a lot like Purdue’s Drew Brees but does not throw the ball with as much velocity down the field. Rattay is not tall and lacks arm strength, but he has great instincts and feel and plays in a very QB-friendly, multiple-WR offense that is kind of an offshoot of the run-and-shoot and puts up remarkable numbers. Rattay keeps the chains moving and puts points on the board.

Seems primed to live up to monumental hype that plagued him as a college quarterback. Is a relentless worker and tireless viewer of film. Understands and plans to improve weaknesses. Has all the tools but is not instinctual. Seems to lock in and focus in the red zone. Cannot question his intelligence. Throws a nice deep ball but lacks great arm strength. Mechanics are far from perfect and his lower-half stiffness doesn’t always agree with throwing motion. Deliberate motion is flawed by a high release point and long stride. Ball doesn’t come out on third or fifth step every time, which indicates rhythm isn’t what it should be and forces some throws behind his receivers. Played with great WR corps at Texas and might struggle with a less-talented supporting cast. Has tendency to overrate his arm strength. Good touch on intermediate-range throws and passes to backs. Despite slow 40 time, can make plays with his feet. Was not clutch in big games at Texas.

Neither have great stats:
Simms

Rattay

Either will be fine, Rattay was actually the other option being considered when Tommy was drafted (per Holley's book). Simms was playing okay before his injury, I can live with him. Re-signing Gutierrez to the PS would be reasonable I think.

I say let Thunderdome settle it. "two men enter, one man leaves":violent:

Rattay had a couple of good games covering for Garcia a few years ago. I don't know about Simms, I wouldn't really blame him for his numbers, since TB just doesn't seem like an offense oriented team.

Seems like Simms would be the better choice because of his age and lack of wear, all things being equal. Since I don't know much about either, I guess I'll have to leave it to BB to make the decision :)

Yes, I remember reading that. Given that fact, and that he seems to be seen as someone with "good instincts", I think I would prefer Rattay over Simms. Simms seems to be more of a gunslinger. If we are going to go that way, we might as well get Culpepper

Too bad Flutie wasnt 10 years younger....

Gutierrez is preferable to either, IMO.

I'd say Rattay. He would be the quintessential game manager. Plus, he has a spleen.

Not according to the people who run this team he isn't. In fact, according to them he is not good enough to keep on the practice squad. I tend to agree.

If he was so good, I would wonder why they're not on the phone with him right now, being that he has experience in the system. I'll trust B.B.

As for this threads question, I would much rather Rattay.

Sorry, I meant "I tend to agree with BB", maybe that read wrong. Never understood the MG love, and think it was just a byproduct of Matt Cassel hate more than anything else.

Seeing these names make me feel helpless.

This may be a complete non issue, but is there any noticeable difference for a receiver catching a ball from a lefty as opposed to a righty? If everyone is geared up to catch them coming from a righty angle and spin, would it throw them off to suddenly need to catch them from Simms?

Probably not, but didn't know if anyone had any insight.

actually, I was agreeing with you. :D

remember , simms is Left handed QB. its a big adjustment for the line and even playcalling like screens and all.

Would Vinnie T be at all a possibility?

What about Kelley Holcomb? He was a decent starter for some time and put up some big numbers in a few games.

I would love to believe in Cassel, and it would be a fairytale story if he led them to a winning season and the playoffs, but this kid lacks skills. He takes too many sacks and if he runs, he needs to run more to get away from those. Some of the catches made yesterday were the talent of the receivers not his passing prowess. He is going to throw too many inopportune picks that will kill us.

Simms led a very vanilla Tampa Bay offense with limited star power to the playoffs. You can't rate that offense with ours. Maybe Simms shines here.

I have never been impressed with Rattay. Might as well struggle with Cassel.

I am more concerned with reading defenses, Cassel has no chance. It seemed like O'Connel was slightly better in preseason at that. If you remember , Brady was chosen to start when Bledsoe went down over, I believe it was Bishop. I would not want this season just to be the audition for Cassel for a team in 2008.

Speaking of fairytales, Culpepper has a chip on his shoulder, something to prove, a better arm than Cassel and he actually won some games with the sorry Phins and Raiders. I just think he has seen some things that Cassel , Rattay and Simms have not. I think this team would play for Culpepper. Remember, in the preseason it was said that this team did not play for Cassel even when he had the first team under him. No matter the lip service of "We will follow our new leader Matt" business, under every players (and coaches) breath there is the big "yikes" factor.

Yes, they will give Matt the next two games, but at the by-week it will be time for agonizing reappraisal. Maybe Cassel survives, Maybe O'Connel is put up as fodder, or I think out best chance to win is Simms, Holcomb or Culpepper not necessarily in that order.

I agree and I am a patriotic canuck like the next guy, but keep in mind that would mean Kaczur will protect Simms blindside.

Just something to think about...

Simms, Rattay, Culpepper ......... any QB available out there at this stage of the game is gonna be a huge ? so you might as well just flip a coin.

Personally, I think our best shot is to stick with Cassel as the starter and bring in a vet as his backup.
