They really needed to use a flash slideshow? A simple list wouldn't do?

Seems like a lot of the UNDERPAID are still in rookie contracts, as expected. I can see a bunch of those guys turning into OVERPAID players in free agency (Derek Anderson: Matt Cassel, Tony Brown: Tommy Kelly). For that reason, this list doesn't really say much about how well a team is ran by upper management. Guess you can reach and say that the Pats had a great 2005 draft given three of their picks ended up on the UNDERPAID list (Cassel, Mankins, and Hobbs).

On the flip side, it is clear which teams are mis-managed by owner/management. RAIDERS locked up OVERPAID slots with Javon Walker, Tommy Kelly, Michael Huff, and DeAngelo Hall. I would assume Jamarcus Russell was second place in OVERPAID QBs, but I think it is fair to assume that Thomas Howard and Kurt Morrison are in the UNDERPAID category.

Next years nominies should be (from the Pats)...

Just thinking about the Jets wasting that much money on Vernon Munster will always make me smile.

Oh, and I'd argue that Welker is underpaid too, even with his $18 million contract. Of course, it's great for the team, but relative to the market and what he brings to a team....

The Tommy Kelly contract is one of the biggest headscratchers I've ever seen in any sport and that's saying a lot considering the amount of money thrown about in the NBA for some bad talent.

Are you sure that Eliis Hobbles was on the most over rated list?

Some of the comments on there about Cassel are just so pathetic.

Yes, interestingly enough there is relatively little overlap between the two lists. 16 teams have players on the Overpaid list and 16 teams have players on the Underpaid list, but only six teams are on both lists.

Whatever Welker is making is well under his value.

Counting playoffs, 32 games, 235 receptions, 2,390 yards, 11 touchdowns, returns punts and kicks, blocks like an animal, and can be a backup kicker.

With no disrespect to any WR in the league, Welker should be making top-5 WR money.

Re: Three NEP players make the Fox All-underpaid team

    Yeah seriously. Especially this bozo:

If this idiot knew anything, he'd be able to see Cassel's decesion making skills and not just the stats. For instance his interception numbers, or the way he's learning to menuvar in the pocket. Fact is he HAS put up 2007 Brady-like numbers in some games, Which means he has something to build upon. Not to the haters though. To them, Moss is in the bakefield making the decesions & the blocks and is also upfield making the catches as well.

Players that outplay their contract get a bump from the league contract at years end, right? I believe Koppen got the largest bonus one year.

Would anyone like to refresh my memory on how that works, exactly?

It's a pool divided up among all players based on playing time and salary.

Each team gets an equal performance pay pool to divide up between their players. It is divided based on what % of their team's plays each player participated in, multiplied by the inverse of their salary. So someone with double the salary as someone else would get half the bonus for the same playing time, and someone with twice the plays as someone else with the same salary would get double the bonus. (At least that's how they explain it in a simplified way, maybe they tweak it more than that, I don't know.)

One of the odd things that gets lost in the publicity about people like Koppen getting a $100,000+ payoff is that everyone gets such a check, but most are relatively small. So Brady will get a performance check this year which could well be the lowest on the team.

That's the basic principle, yes. Brady's bonus checks have been pretty darn small regardless (think about it for a second--if he and, say, Ellis Hobbs had the same number of snaps last year, he'd get 10-20 times less than Hobbs did).

Reiss has written about this in the past; I'm all but certain that, in his rookie season, Randall Gay had the highest PP bonus in the league.

I guess Mankins is underpaid but he's not having that great of a year.

Thanks. I thought it was a league wide pot. Each team gets an equal allotment, eh?
