    This :D

Showing a strong run formation like that leaves so many opportunities for this team.

I loved it when they used that formation last year....i think Dan Connoly was used as the FB. It's a beatiful sight.

This is called the tank personnel. I wouldn't be surprised if we used it a few times this coming season.

However, based on what I saw at the pro-bowl where it seemed like BB was putting Light inside on most snaps for some reason, and shifting Mankins over to the right, I wouldn't be surprised to see this OL formation to start off with; it would squeeze a year or two more out of Light:

    Solder -- Light -- Koppen -- Mankins -- Vollmer

I was thinking the same thing. That would be an outstanding O line. Cannon will be a welcome addition as well.

I think it'd be unrealistic to expect Cannon to start this season for us. He may even be on the PUP and red-shirted with next year in mind.

I'm not convinced Light can make the shift inside, but if he can, great. Connolly got pushed around a bit, but he was serviceable and could fill in for a year at RG with Mankins staying at LG, or filling in for Koppen while we find a long-term answer at C.

Bottom line is the OL looks a lot better than it did, and could be one of the best in the league in the next year or two.

Although you technically need 7 men on the line, they usually let this type of formation go because it's a bunch where the LT is just half a step behind.

I remember about 15-20 years ago, the Packers invented the ultimate powerrun formation. It was called something silly like the "hog formation." They had 9 down linemen (yes, that's NINE), with a QB and a single tailback.

Needless to say, it didn't catch on. :D

IIRC, the offensive line, and anyone "attached to it" is always considered on the LOS. You wouldn't be able to have a shotgun formation otherwise.

It works. Why else do you think Goalline formations aren't called illegal.
You'd have to be careful to signal to the refs which guys are lining up as eligible receivers in that formation though.

Re: The Ultimate Power run Formation

Many feel that Koppen is the weak cog in the run game, but he is vital in calling the passing game blocking. That may be the case, but people have tended to overlook that BB and Dante have been grooming two interior linemen as Center/guards for a few seasons now. It is getting to the time to graduate from the Dante School for NFL Offensive Linemen.

He has been beefing up both marginal-sized, but admitted hard-***** Ryan Wendell, a CG; and also tough-guy Rich Ohrnberger a GC, for one of them to assume the job of Next Generation Center.

We should expect one or both to make a move this season, with completion in 2013. However, the change over from Neal at RG and/or Mankins departure, might delay the transition a bit.

Finally a reason to pay attention to the Pro Bowl!

Maybe the Pats CAN give Light a multi-year role on the team, and pay him accordingly.

Besides the point that there's room for Light with both Solder and Mankins -- how likely is it that Solder and Mankins both ever start for the Pats the same season? Base case is that Solder will be a backup his first year, and that Mankins will be gone after that.

Naturally, I'd like to see both Light and Mankins kept. Even if Cannon pans out, causing a logjam, having one extra starting-quality player in a group of 3-4 positions is often a good thing.

I think center is a definite need in the coming seasons. Koppen has been abused up the middle progressively since 42.
