Brian Williams embellished a few stories to make himself a little more heroic than he actually was. BIG DEAL!!!! Just during the Deflate-Gate BS, I have now seen the following:

-A false report from Bob Glauber at Newsweek stating that D'Qwell Jackson could tell the ball was deflated when he intercepted it. Barely any apology or retraction; he gets off scot-free like it's nothing. This is an outright lie of a story. No big deal, though; he was already onto his next "update" on Deflate-gate within a day of his lie being called out by the source himself.

-A complete hatchet-job article by Michael Rosenberg of SI that took yellow journalism to new heights. The article was taken down recently by a Boston writer; it was filled with lies, unsubstantiated rumors, falsehoods about the Patriots "taping against the Rams" and was an outright BS piece about Belichick's integrity. Not a problem, Michael. Keep fighting the good fight.

-Bob Kravitz recently tiptoed back with his "mea culpa" explaining that his words were out-of-context. He failed to mention that he had about 10 Twitter tweets which were troll-ish and clearly stating that the Patriots were definitely guilty, without actually having evidence. His articles have presumed, as fact, that the Patriots have committed a violation, a huge no-no in journalism. It's okay, Bob. It's just your profession to follow objective standards and not state unproven allegations as facts. You're okay, you're job is safe.

-Jay Glazer INTENTIONALLY misled readers over the course of weeks. First he "broke" a story that Deflate-Gate was a sting operation; the next day, he "broke" a story that it was not a sting operation. He manipulated his readers by telling them that a Patriots employee was being "zeroed in on" for taking the balls to an undisclosed location. He knew damn well that it was an elderly employee going to the bathroom, and the NFL had already looked into it a week ago, but he spread some breadcrumbs, with each bite another spike in ratings, over a period of time, knowing the conclusion would be different from what the readers were specualting. This, though, a flat-out lie, an in-your-face case of lying, tabloid journalism, is passed over. Go get 'em, Jay! That's integrity for you!! Belichick and Brady are evil, though. And Brian Williams.

-We suspect that Chris Mortensen published a false story about the deflation of the footballs, although it could be that Ian Rapaport's was false. Either way, someone should need to answer for this, but they won't. One of them will be wrong (probably Mortensen, who has been wrong many times before), but the public will still eat up his next fake report like maggots on a carcass.

-An article published by ESPN.com with a bunch of paranoid quotes from a former Panthers GM. Not a single fact was included in the story, and there was hardly a reference to the fact the Panthers had a congressional investigation for their rampant steroid use during the same time period. It is the type of article that Perez Hilton would struggle to put in their blog for fear of criticism from their own half-witted readers. It's okay, though, ESPN wins because their ratings go up.

-Neil de Grasse Tyson: Off scott-free!!! No big deal that he in fact was dead-wrong in his scientific analysis, so everyone on The View and about 75% of America has a wrong scientific outlook. Hey, Brian Williams pumped out his chest a little, so he is evil, but this jackass is supposed to be a "scientist" that people trust and he can't even get it right. I'm sure he will be called in again on the next science debate; who cares if he is actually right or wrong; after all, he is a "celebrity" so he should get paid a lot of money and must be right.

-A major newspaper (can't even remember which one) refuted Belichick's science claims. The actual scientist who was quoted in the article was trying to get the story retracted because her quotes were mangled and her conclusions were completely mis-represented. No big deal; just another day in the life of a newspaper business.

-Not one SINGLE mention from any reporter outside of Boston that the media itself has now been caught in an outright lie in regards to the Patriots and "cheating" when the Boston Herald issued an apology in 2008. No, according to them, Belchick does not deserve the benefit of the doubt, and neither does Brady; oh, and they brought this upon themselves. No mention that Belichick or Kraft never once lied during "SpyGate" and came clean immediately, though the media DID in fact lie with a fake article.

-When the Patriots are cleared, how can anyone with a straight face say that Brian Williams deserves to lose his job but Mark Brunell, Jerome Bettis, and a variety of other hacks deserve to keep theirs? We are talking about "professionals" who call other men liars with absolutely nothing to go on. They certainly will not have to answer for their "opinions", no matter how unfounded, ill-intended, foolish those opinions are.

-Too many news anchors, analysts, and talk show hosts to even name who have gone on the air and stated the Patriots are guilty without even having the facts, pounding their chests in the name of "integrity" when ironically, they are at the same time showing they have none of it. They will surely be too busy ratcheting up the next BS scandal when the Patriots are cleared, and their credibility won't ever take a hit.

And now all of these self-righteous journalists want us to think that Brian Williams is the system's problem child because he made a couple of exaggerations that don't even materially effect any of the stories. Oh, this is really too much. All of the people mentioned above should be fired immediately, but instead they'll get a big bonus check for their role in "Deflate-Gate". To put it in perspective, if Brian Williams' "crimes" had been included in this controversy, it would have involved a report that he brushed against D'Qwell Jackson after the interception and therefore was up-close to the story. Does that really seem like a big crime in relation to all of the over-the-top lies that have been perpetrated by other media members??? Journalism has now sunken beneath banking and law as the dirtiest, most self-serving, hypocrtical profession in the United States. Sorry to all the Mike Reiss types out there; I wish there were more of you.

Fair points, that's good perspective. It doesn't get Williams off the hook, but the point remains, it's rather laughable how infrequently the media is held accountable for their actions.

Williams- Minor crimes with major criticism.
Deflategate Media- Major crimes with minor, if any, criticism.

Nice job, OP. It's probably better to put this here because it fits the discussion better than the New England Patriots 2014-2015 Champions [Patriots vs the World] thread:

In the section of the video that deals with the ball deflation controversy, there's a clip of some Indianapolis sports guy interviewing Kravitz. As Kravitz is describing what the league is looking into, the interviewer is shaking his head with disgust as if he's listening to the details of some horrific crime, not the PSI in a football. Hopefully, that guy gets his deserved Academy Award nomination.

I fail to see what one situation has to do with the other.

To be fair, Tyson did admit his error publicly, and not in a John Claytonesque way.

Journalists, in general, never go after journalists. They are all afraid of if they do, someone else may dig up dirt on them too.

The funny thing is, by journalism standards, this is the second worst crime a journalist can do. Making up a story is only trumped by plagiarism in terms of cheating by a journalist.
