Should the NFL have a lottery system for the draft?

The problem is figuring out which guy is the right guy. For every Andrew Luck and Cam Newton, there's a JaMarcus Russell or Alex Smith. Peyton Manning yes, David Carr no. Tim Couch? Tim Couch??? Really Browns???

Absolutely, but whether one player is actually WORTH vastly more than the others is different from whether one is VALUED vastly higher. Just look at 2012, when the Rams pocketed an extra two 1sts and a 2nd for moving down four spots, while the next team up, the Vikings, only managed to get day 3 picks for moving down, albeit just 1 slot.

(FWIW I don't believe an NBA-style draft is the answer, though.)

That's an important distinction to make.

Value is incredibly subjective. The Redskins and Browns both made huge offers for that pick. No surprise, they're also two of the worst teams in the league over the past decade.

And I agree, a lottery isn't necessary for the NFL.

The Colts certainly should not have been able to guarantee themselves Andrew Luck in 2011, and no team should be able to "earn" a franchise quarterback merely by stinking more than anyone else. They are rewarded for their failures and often times rewarded for not trying.

Surely, this was one of the most obvious frauds in all of sports, as it went on for an entire season! And how the IND fans and team cheered when they "won their #1 pick," as though they won the Super Bowl itself. It was more than obvious that they were playing for that (#1) all year long, as though that was their goal. Make no qualms about it: The IND Colts were playing to lose as many as it took to secure the #1 overall position in the NFL draft.

Oddly, their fans understood this and jumped on board. Hence the celebrations about acquiring the #1 pick. What HOF QB? What losing season? They have no shame. May they never win another Super Bowl ever, again, and be forever reminded of their non-sportsmanlike off-field plays. :p

I'm surprised Irsay didn't put up a banner. He was probably too high to notice.

Still, Luck was no sure thing. And he wasn't even Rookie of the Year either. That honour went to RG III, and yes, there was a time some people thought RG III was better than Luck. Washington would eventually replace him with the 102nd overall pick in the same draft, Kirk Cousins.

And potentially the best QB of that draft, Russell Wilson, was selected 75th overall.

So it's easy to look back and claim it was such an advantage to pick 1st overall, but it really is a selective sort of thinking.
