Should the Browns have traded for Mallett, rather than drafting Weeden?
By: John Morgan

Should the Browns have traded their #22 pick to the Patriots for Ryan Mallett, rather than drafting Brandon Weeden? It seems like it could have been a win-win for both teams had that deal been made...

This topic was actually discussed by the pundits on the NFL Network. And the basic reasoning that was mentioned as to WHY the Browns wouldn't pursue Mallett is that they were instituting a WCO and that doesn't fit Mallett's strengths and weaknesses, where as Weeden was considered a better fit.

Only time will tell.

If I were the Browns I would never pull that trigger...Mallet is just as unproven as Weeden in the NFL his few appearances he made last year in preseason games he looked terrible...so if as a Brown I'm not gaining real NFL experience why would I trade my first round pick away to a AFC rival for the same type of player I can get by using it???

I proposed this deal prior to the draft (consider my thunder blown ;) ) Only it was a predraft trade for Cleveland's early 2nd rounder (I forget which, but it was in the 30's) I thought it was a no brainer for Cleveland in that they would be getting a guy with a year's NFL experience, someone younger, with "the character risk" had been mitigated by Pats experience and and at least an equal potential to be a franchise QB as Weeden. Now the Browns have their QB AND the pick they used to move up.

The only legitimate reason NOT to pull off this trade was DB's explanation, that Cleveland was looking more toward the WC offense which requires more mobility that Mallet provides. Mallet's lack of mobility is ANOTHER reason the Pats were the perfect place for him to get to.

Why would they trade for Mallet when they already passed him numerous times in the draft?

They don't want him. Nobody wanted him. He's going to have to show a lot in pre-season and spot duty for anyone to trade for him.

Maybe teams were scared off prior to the draft for off the field incidents, but in order for teams to to be interested in him now, he has to show more than he did in the New Orleans game.

There is no denying his prototypical size and the cannon arm. Now he needs to work really hard on accuracy, touch and decision making. If those two elements ever come on line for Mallet, we will have many potential dance partners willing to make a trade.
