Personally I think he got some sort of concessions - maybe not the promise of not using the tag again, but something...Just what? We will see.

Why wait for four weeks when you could’ve had the same deal at the start of camp?

“How do you know (it is the same)? I’m not gonna answer that. You can go find that out through somebody else.”

    Something was done - hmmmmm

If Bill Belichick were a player in Samuel's situation, that is the exact interview he would give.

It's funny -- I think Zant's picked up BB-speak as well as he has BB's scheme.

Glad to get him back in the fold now go out there Assante and play catch with that mini football again.
I hope we didn't give up the right to tag him next year that's a huge bargaining chip and can't see Beoli doing that.

My guess is that if there were some sort of concessions made, they were of the cosmetic variety, and aimed at allowing Samuel to save face.

I highly doubt the Pats gave up their right to franchise him in '08.

Who knows if he's really happy?

Making some cosmetic changes to the franchise tender enables him to say he's happy, which both allows him to act like he didn't "lose" the negotiation process, and keeps the press from turning his malcontentedness into a running story.

Since he knows that the terms of the agreement will never be leaked by the Pats, he can front like he got more from them than he did.

I can jump on the "magic" bandwagon. I think we have a chance to be something very special this season. Worldbeaters.

Glad you're back, Asante, glad everyone's "happy," but Fark Off. You're an idiot. Go play ball.

    Disable Jersey

    Welcome back, Asante.

You made a great contribution last season but the team came up short. Here's to going further this term.

Thanks Asante. Glad your back and looking forward to seeing you out there. Does this mean your going to get rid of that tattoo?

As I said long long ago - if there were ever to be an agreement not to tag him next year to get him back now, it could never be divulged by either side.

Making a public demand and having an organization give into sets a bad precedent and the Patriots wont do that again (the Branch situation set a bad enough precedent as it was, even though they got a 1st round pick)

Mangini's going to learn the hard way caving the way he did for Revis is going to haunt him for the rest of his career. Sadly its also going to impact every other team with first round draft choices in that range in the future as well.

That's what I had said in a different thread titled "Will The Patriots Let Asante Walk After 2007" but was absolutely blasted for it.

This is just a shot in the dark, but with the way Asante has been reacting it's possible that what he was granted is that he won't get the franchise tender. I could see it being something like the Patriots instead getting the right to match the highest deal on the open market he reciieves or something like 90% percent of the total value of any deal offered in 2008. Or Perhaps they decided to limit the trade clause to just one first rounder in return instead of the required 2 first rounders. If they decided to leave the tag out and told them not to parade it, the Patriots benefit because they can come out looking like they simply decided not to tag him at the beginning of the next off-season if that is the case. So, for future negotiations like these players won't simply look at this situation and realize that what Asante did is all they will have to do.
