Since Wilfork has now signed a contract, is it possible to use the franchise tag again before the start of the season? Or is it an one time per-season year only?

I'm pretty sure the window for tagging players is now closed. I think it's 2 weeks typically...

Edit: Not sure about using it more than once within the window. My guess would be no.

It is not possible to use the franchise tag more than once a year.

The window for the tagging ended prior to the start of free agency. Once free agency begins, any player you had that isn't under contract or a franchise or RFA tag is no longer associated with your team in any way and the team has no rights to him unless they resign them.

For example, before yesterday the Pats had no more rights for Leigh Bodden than any other team in the league.

Thanks all for the clarification.

Well, the franchise deadline is technically before that (February 25 or 26 this year).

But the whole "using the franchise tag again" idea was only part of the pre-2006 CBA, when you'd have to wait until the player's deal ended to use it again.
