HAGGANS DRAWING INTEREST
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2008, 7:23 p.m.

Although things have slowed down considerably on the NFL free agent front, one veteran linebacker appears to be drawing more interest now than he has at any point in the last two weeks.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that free agent linebacker Clark Haggans, who has played his entire eight-year NFL career in Pittsburgh, is becoming a hot commodity on the free agent market. According to Schefter, the Browns and Colts have both called Haggans recently, and the Steelers are still interested in re-signing him as well.

Haggans has a visit with Cleveland scheduled for next week, and he would appear to be a good fit there, both because his skills are well suited for the defense Browns coach Romeo Crennel runs, and because the Browns have made clear this off-season that they’re more interested in acquiring veterans who can help them win now than they are in building for the future.

The 31-year-old Haggans started all 16 games in Pittsburgh last season, but if he returns to the Steelers in 2008 he may have trouble holding onto his spot in the starting lineup, as 2007 second-round draft pick LaMarr Woodley is being groomed for the job.

Curious no visible interest from Pats. Could have sworn they would take a look at him in FA. Maybe they're working behind the scenes, who knows. But IMO they still need to add at least 1-2 vet LBs, maybe more if the draft strategy of No Rookie LBs continues to hold true.

Not sure why...maybe more interest in Seward..SPikes..other 2nd tier players..Maybe they think Haggans has fallen an dwants a bit too much...who knows..They do need an OS rusher...Seau back...maybe PUP??

I think it is perfectly clear why the Pats haven't made a big play for him. He is attracting enough interest from other teams to drive the price up.

Even if the Pats are hot on him, odds are we won't find out until just before they sign him or at least have him in for a visit. Every year, we never find out about some of these things until they are close to done.

Actually interest in him may not be that high. Per PFT, there is some speculation that his agent is trying to create this 'phony' interest in him because at this point there isn't any.

Still - I seem to recall another LB that came out of Pittsburgh that did pretty well here.

Maybe the price will be right and we can get a no risk contract situation if indeed other teams question him fitting into their system.

PFT says nevermind, there actually is not too much interest.

HAGGANS NOT REALLY DRAWING INTEREST?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 15, 2008, 9:31 a.m.
In response to a Friday night report that free-agent linebacker Clark Haggans is drawing interest two weeks into the shopping process, a league source has shared an interesting perspective with us.

The source believes that Haggans isn’t drawing interest, but that his agent is trying to generate it. Repeatedly.

It’s a classic situation, the source said. “The agent sells the player prior to free agency, the media sells the player prior to free agency, none of the league people think the player is any good, the expectations are unrealistic, and now the agent and the player are trying to save face.”

The concern could be that Haggans is a system player in Pittsburgh’s 3-4 and that he won’t be able to perform well elsewhere, like many of the Steelers linebackers who have left for greener pastures via free agency.
