Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building

Yeah, I know, I was largely kidding. It's actually fairly common for any business to escort a fired employee out.
Not for senior positions. Sure, you might expect a customer service rep to flip out and try to sabotage something on their way out, but not someone with a reputation to maintain.

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: He's out]

What he did to Browns, is almost criminal. Keeping 80 yr old RB and getting no suitable replacements, getting rid of two best receiving options for virtually nothing, indecisions at QB....I mean guy was lucky Browns were used to the suck. Imagine if that was Pioli when he was with Pats....he would have burned at stakes....I actually feel bad for their fans, even with Mangini present.

HE didn't do anything besides get talked into taking a dead end/no win job probably because Ozzie is entrenched in Baltimore. Mangini was the top dog, this guy was just his lackey. He was supposed to be a pretty bright guy, although maybe he had a touch of his buddy's impatience or arrogance. I think he just got talked into doing Eric's bidding because that's Captain Queeg's MO. He's a lot cheaper to fire than Mangini, who either turned his back on his pal or is being goaded into quitting so Lerner won't have to eat his salary which is likely triple Kokinis.

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: He's out]

Another great MangIdiot moment... as Mangnini's the defacto GM himself, and hand-picked Kokinis - and presumably had authority over all personnel moves - this doesn't cast him in the best light.

And that light gets even dimmer when one steps back and appreciate's MangIdiot demonstrating that great leadership quality of throwing a loyal lieutenant on a grenade to save himself.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: He's out]

Will they fire everyone except Mangini? I do think it is funny that Browns fans compared Mangini and Kokinis to Belichick and Pioli and claimed that like Belichick, Mangini would learn from his mistakes and become a great coach the second time around. Unless Mangini convinced Lerner that it was everyone else's fault beside him, Mangini might have to wait for the third time around to get it right.

Good thing for him that if he gets fired, he will have three years of severence because all the stories coming out of Cleveland this year will make it hard for him to get another job even as an assistant. Imagine that Lerner thought that the team of Mangini and Kokinis were the ones he absolutely had to have. Eventhough no one else in the world wanted Mangini (and we see for obvious reasons).

Maybe Mangini can get lucky and Al Davis will hire him next year. Mangini is a monumental failure which makes him perfect to be the head coach of the Raiders.

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: He's out]

Kokinis with Newsome is responsible for building the Baltimore roster.

Amazingly, Mangini--when apprised they were bringing in a top GM type to manage personnel--said he was highly enthusiastic about the idea. He threw his old GM under the bus.

Browns hire George Kokinis as general manager - ESPN

A funny read in hindsight... this firing is about Mangini's football advice as much as whatever bad moves Kokinis made... it seems like Mangini had the final word there anyways

CLEVELAND -- Baltimore pro personnel director George Kokinis has been hired as Cleveland's general manager, reuniting him with new Browns coach and close friend Eric Mangini.

Kokinis, who began his NFL career as an intern in the Browns' operations department in 1991, was hand-picked by Mangini, who recommended him during his first interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner on Dec. 30. Mangini took over as Cleveland's coach on Jan. 7, just one week after he was fired following three seasons with the New York Jets.

Determined to match a coach and GM who can work well together after the Romeo Crennel-Phil Savage relationship failed, Lerner is teaming up a pair of friends who shared an apartment when they first broke into the league and have remained tight.

Who ever could have thought that pairing a former Patriots DC and a Ravens Front office guy could have gone wrong?

Make no mistake. Mangini made most of those decisions.

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building

This would be almost as radical as hiring a fired first time HC and allowing him to handpick his GM...in the first place.

Isn't that exactly what the Pats did with BB?

Its a good point, Wildo. I say in rebuttle, that prior to being hired by Kraft in 2000, BB had over 25 years of experience as an NFL position coach, coordinator and HC with decent success and had won Super Bowls. His refererences (Mara, etc.) were impeccable. By all accounts, they players liked him in CLE- obviously the owner and fans did not. Plus the Krafts knew him with their time with him in 1996.

As it relates to Mangini, he has only one winning season in the NFL and has been pretty dishonorable.

My .02$

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: Done...Accorsi?

Wow, outlets are now reporting it's Ernie Accorsi, not Cowher, who is the said "consultant" and who may even become the new GM. I've even heard that Bernie Kosar will be "groomed" into the new GM:

Mangini, Kokinis marriage was doomed from the start | ProFootballTalk.com

Has anyone else read Accorsi's biography, "The GM?"

Yeah, it's unfair to Belichick to compare him to Mangini. Belichick had a far superior resume and had also spent a year with the Patriots where he got to know the Krafts as opposed to the one interview Mangini had. It was a risk that the Krafts took, no doubt, but there was a lot more reason to think Belichick would succeed than Mangini.

Sounds like Mangini might have engineered this firing. He and Kokinis were butting heads and Kokinis actually thought that since his contract said he had final say that he actually had final say. Mangini might have sold Lerner that most of the problems that the Browns have are Kokinis' fault.

Mangini has shown he isn't afraid to stab the guy who made him what he was in the back. Would it be shocking that he would sell out his friends to keep his job?

Thats not as fun. I say it was a love triangle w/ O'Brien and Mangini got PO'ed..:p

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: Accorsi -> Kosa

And, of course, it's Kokinis' fault that Derek Anderson is performing not just badly, but once-in-a-generation badly (from the ESPN article):

According to STATS LLC, his 36.2 QB rating is the lowest of any player through eight weeks since Oakland's Marc Wilson in 1981. Also, Anderson's 320 yards passing in the past four games are the fewest by any quarterback with a minimum of 80 attempts since Chicago's Vince Evans in '81.

Yes, except for the four years BB spent as an assistant HC under Parcells (one in NE, and three with the JEST).

Re: OT: PFT: Browns GM Kokinis seen escorted out of building [Update: Accorsi -> Kosa

Wow, Adam Schefter wrote this on his twitter account a few minutes ago:

"Stat of the month or maybe year: This season, the Saints defense has six touchdowns while the Browns offense has five."

Wow, just wow...
