Reading that kind of information didn't convince Belichick or any of the GM's to draft Roberts until the bottom of the 7th round.
Tom Brady and Julian Edelman say hi!

Alright you made your point. He is a bad CB and a wasted draft pick and there is no chance he sticks.
Kind of like there was no way UDFA Malcolm Butler was making the team and then there was no way he was staying on the roster after Browner returned from suspension.
Hell Sherman was passed over for 5 rounds
That's all?
If Belichick thought that Roberts were better than Fletcher, Dennard or Ryan, he might have drafted him in the late 3rd round or in the 4th. He certainly would have drafted him in the 6th instead of Wells. To Belichick, Roberts was NOT good enough to use the 177th pick for. Belichick and all the rest of the GM's passed on Roberts for 7 full rounds.
None of the Patriots 2015 draft picks have played a snap in the NFL let alone come in for camp. Being optimistic about their future possibilities sure beats the alternative! You're right. Realistically, BB valued drafting a long snapper over Roberts. 7th round success rate is minimal too.
The excitement is just fun fan optimism/homerism. Realism is necessary for projecting the 53 man roster, and realistically, Roberts has an uphill battle.
He will be an interesting player to watch in TC/preseason though. That's why I like the pick.
Thanks for posting. With all the draft info saying he was a 6th or 7th rounder, to pick him in round 2, is pathetic. Does anybody think he would not have been there in round 3 or 4, and if he wasn't, so what? I liked their first pick, and the rest of their draft, but his was beyond foolish. If he becomes a Hall of Famer, they still could have traded down, added picks, and still had him.
OK, let's be clear.
Belichick PASSED on Brady for over 5 rounds and on Edelman for 6. Why is he a genius for picking them late? Belichick would have been more of genius if he had drafted Brady and Edelman in the 2nd and 3rd when other had them rated as 6th or 7th round values.
Belichick does indeed do well with late round picks and UDFA's. Every year he has about 20 of them in house and a couple make the team. 10% is pretty good. This year he may have a better chance since most value these 7th rounders to be as good as his 2nd and 3rd round picks.
Same type of people who still think Jamie Collins was a bad pickPosts like these truly make no sense. One, as has been pointed out ad nauseum, nobody knows that he would have been available later. It took 39 picks before another safety was selected, for the record.
Two and most importantly, the idea that if he becomes a Hall of Famer there's a "Yeah but" attached is simply ridiculous. But I suppose, anything to prevent many on this board from ever admitting they were wrong.

People want to pooh-pah Richard's smarts, but maybe Belichick thinks having a potential field general on defense is worth it even in a safety with so-called average physical talents.
Yup and if Jordan Richards becomes an impact player on a super bowl winning defense it will still always be a stupid pick because some jerkoff Internet "journalists" say he was a 6th rounder. We had a year and a half of Collins sucks, is overrated, isn't a starting caliber LB comments etc.. but after a little wagging of the dog, we are being asked to believe their issue was never with Collins the player, just that Belichick was an idiot in where he drafted him.
This exemplifies my biggest complaint with the super vocal critics of everything Belichick does. It's NOT that you are criticizing someone that I think is infallible (he's not), its how tireless and snarky they are in bringing the topic up. We have to listen to their absolute authoritative condemnation of any particular move for months and years on end.. but at the first sign of a player turning it around and them feeling like they might appear to have been in the wrong and its...
... crickets.

It's the whole "why can't we have guys like that" mentality that people get caught up in around here from listening to too much idiotic local sports talk radioExactly. It's always, always a no win situation.
While the information is still fresh. I should make a quick list of all the players in the first two rounds that got chosen way ahead of where they were projected or those who weren't picked at all.
A poster here once paraphrased a conversation he got to have with a real GM at a dinner party. Of the things the GM told him, what stuck in my head was the GM saying that were are only a couple of experts outside of the NFL that are capable of NFL level talent evaluation. And even among the NFL professionals, there are a lot of disagreements in where a player is ranked.
You can easily convince me that we should have drafted both Wilson and Richards a full round later than we did. Anything more than that and I'm simply calling BS on your ability to predict the future of the draft.
Hell, we had a lot of posters last year at this time who in their rush to second guess Belichick just refused to believe that Easley wasn't an over reach. And in that case, there was even undeniable evidence the Seahawks were going to take him at 32.
