Draft 2013 - 2022: 1st and 2nd Round

I suppose the bill bobos won't have much to say in this thread. bills drafts have been absolute garbage for a long time and they have put the franchise in a 5 year hole
But the team owes it to Bill to allow him to put us in a 10 year hole instead. He earned that.

Bill sucks at drafting in rounds 1-3, he somehow makes up for it overall in the later rounds and with UDFA signings. Its mind boggling how you can find diamonds in the rough in later rounds but miss the obvious diamonds in the early rounds. Hopefully they tank the rest of the season, we get a STRONG armed QB that will develop into someone that scares teams, and we can see some fireworks around here again.
We can only guess why Bill has success in the later rounds but not early. It's unlikely that a reporter will ask the question of Bill and very likely that he'd answer with nothing but snorts and grunts if someone did ask.

My conspiracy theory is that it's the first three rounds where Bill steps in and overrides his scouts and it's the later rounds where he listens to them.

With the exception of Sony what BB the GM should be fired for is not even drafting contributing players who start or are top reserves.
Absolutely right.

A pressing need heading into this season was a third down rb and a RT.

Belichick was more concerned about STs than in attempting to fill these positions. He had ample opportunities this past draft.

It’s also the relentless need to draft specialists and STers. Today LT Carter Warren played and played well for the Jets. He was a fourth round pick in the 2023 draft. He was taken at 120 because BB was too impatient for a kicker even though we had at the time Nr Automatic Nick Folk. So he swaps 120 and 184 to the Jets for 112. That’s when Chad Ryland was taken.

Dumb. Just dumb.

Main reason we are where we are? None other than our top picks the last decade. Not including 2023 as it’s not fair to grade yet, although Gonzalez looks like he’ll be good.

Grading: Bust, JAG, Good Starter, All Pro

2013
Rd 1 - no pick
Rd 2 - J. Collins: Good starter - kinda in between JAG and good starter as he was only good for a few years
Rd 2 - A. Dobson: BUST

2014
Rd 1 - D. Easley: BUST
Rd 2 - Jimmy G: JAG - close to good starter but not quite

2015
Rd 1 - M. Brown: BUST
Rd 2 - J. Richards: BUST

2016
Rd 1 - No pick
Rd 2 - C. Jones: BUST

2017
No Rd 1 or 2 picks

2018
Rd 1 - I. Wynn: JAG
Rd 1 - S. Michael: JAG
Rd 2 - D. Dawson: BUST

2019
Rd 1 - N. Harry: BUST
Rd 2 - J. Williams: BUST

2020
Rd 1 - No pick
Rd 2 - K.Dugger: Good player
Rd 2 - J. Uche: JAG

2021
Rd 1 - M.Jones: JAG
Rd 2 - C. Barmore: Good player

2022
Rd 1 - C.Strange: JAG
Rd 2 - T. Thornton: BUST

So for a decade at the top of the draft we have no All Pros, a few good players, and a bunch of JAGS and BUSTS. Bill’s drafting is the main reason we suck.
I don't know about Chandler Jones being a bust. Dude was damn good. Disappeared end of season but he's been a premier pass rusher most of his career.

Cyrus Jones, not Chandler

2013 the Beginning of the end
Super Bowl wins in '14, '16, '18 masks the story of talent depletion. I am now convinced more than ever that Brady made up for BB's failures in drafting during theses SB's. An honest retrospective shows that 2013 was the beginning of the end for the Patriots dynasty. We (at least I) couldn't see it at the time, but hindsight allows us to examine the draft trends over the twenty plus years of BB's reign.

Parcels/Carroll Regimes - 8 pro bowlers
First, let's acknowledge that BB inherited 11 pro bowlers from the Parcels/Carroll regimes. Of these, 8 were on the roster in 2001 and made up most of the core for the next several years. These players undoubtedly gave BB a jump start. They were all pro bowlers, Bledsoe, Brown, Woody, McGinest, Bruschi, Law, Milloy, Vinatieri

Dynasty Part 1 - 17 pro bowlers
Over the first 13 years ('00-'12), BB drafted 17 pro bowlers. These were added to the core group that BB had inherited from the previous regime. Brady, Gronk, Cassel, Light, Koppen, Mankins, Seymour, Wilfork, Jones, Hightower, Mayo, Samuel, Meriweather, McCourty, Gostkowski, Slater, Develin. What's notable about this group that as the original core from the previous regime started to leave in FA/retire/get traded, there were plenty of quality guys from these drafts to step in and fill the gap. During this period, the Pats had as few as 10 and as many as 16 pro bowlers on each squad. 5 super bowl appearances, 3 wins, 1 perfect regular season

Dynasty Part 2 - 3 pro bowlers
2013 was the beginning of the end. From '13 to '23, BB's drafts have produced only 3 pro bowlers thus far. Collins, Thuney, Jones (replacement) Only one is on the current team and his future is very uncertain. Digging in a little deeper, '19 (Brady's last year) there were 8 pro bowlers (from previous drafts) on the team. After Brady left, there were only 4 from '20-'22. It's incredible how Brady and a small core of players not only kept it all from falling apart, but actually won 3 super bowls.

So here we are. The point in all of this is that a reset now is very different from what we experienced in 2001. Then, the "previous regime' players gave the reset a jump start. Now, with so few pro bowl players on the team, we are looking at at least 3 years before we can even begin to compete, and that's with good drafts. As much as I appreciate BB for all he has done, I have my doubts about his ability to build a sustainable roster through the draft.

Sorry for nerding out on this subject but I have been wanting to get this drafting issue off my chest for some time. Drafting in Dynasty Part 1 was terrific. Drafting in Part 2 was horrific and explains why we are where we are. Hope this was helpful.

Troy Brown, Teddy Bruschi, Damien Woody and Viniatieri were not Pro Bowlers when Bill took over.

Gronk, Chandler Jones, Develin, McCourty, Mayo, Slater and Hightower were all part of the 2nd Dynasty not the 1st.

Matt Cassel didn’t make the Pro Bowl with the Pats.

I think you missed the larger point. Gronk, Jones, et al were drafted during Dynasty no 1. And only 3 - Collins, Thuney and Mac drafted in Dynasty 2. As the pro bowlers from Dynasty no 1 were lost through attrition (retires, trades, lost in FA), there was nobody to replace them.

Man….when you stack them up in plain sight it really is awful.

I wonder how everybody else did during the same period. Pro bowlers don’t really equal super bowls as we all know. Also be interesting to look at the drafts from each team through their fans eyes. Rose colored glasses ect… I’m sure there would be more teams than not *****ing about their draft picks. And if that’s the case … are most athletes drafted in the first two rounds all bums, reaches, malcontents ? Been following college since early 80s… thousands of games watched. Can’t tell you how many kids shine two , three years in college then nothing. Almost impossible to predict what’s inside a young man’s head and heart before a little bit of money comes your way or how difficult it is to go to work against other men.

Chiefs draft picks look great despite high draft position. We royally suck at drafting.
