Time to get the hype machine in full gear!
First of all let's look at the size of Kevin O'Connell.
6'5 225 lbs. Excellent height to see the field. Solid weight.
    http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/kevin-o'connell?id=371

Next let's look at what he can do with his feet.
He holds the school career record for yards rushing (1,312) and touchdowns rushing (19) by a quarterback.
That means he can scramble, pick up first downs with his feet when people are covered, and generally be a double threat.

Now let's examine his arm strength.
Arm is strong enough to make all the throws..Nice touch and timing..Is mobile enough to buy time in the pocket and make plays with his feet...Can throw on the run...Hard worker...Very competitive...Team leader...A lot of experience...Has a ton of upside.
    http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/qb/kevinoconnell.html

Next consider his situation. No pressure to start. Learning at the feet of the master in Tom Brady. Absorbing all those hints and tips like a sponge as he waits for his shot. And he is immersed in a team attitude of winning and hard work that will stay with him the rest of his career. It is picks like this that keep dynasties going. See Montana to Young transition, San Francisco 49ers dynasty. In summary, very solid draft pick that can pay off big down the road.

That's great. The guy hasn't even seen Gillete yet and you're already starting a QB controversy.

    #24 Jersey
Four years from now, Tommy will be 34. We'll just have to see how he's going, most likely he'll have 2-3 years left but you never know. If he's showing his age and O'Connell has impressed they could re-sign him and he could move in at the appropriate time. I think most likely he'll end up being traded and we'll draft Tommy's replacement in 2-3 years but it's possible we just did it.

Well I'm thinking it will take a few years for O'Connell to develop. But it's good to know that you've got a very athletic option in development for the most important position on the team. This guy isn't just a late round throwaway pick like Cassell or a walk on free agent like Gutierrez. He has prototypical size, speed, athleticism, and arm strength for the position. The similarities to the situation in San Francisco were too strong to ignore.

If I knew I'd have said. Didn't they pick up a big tall QB from waivers or something part way through the season?

Nope... The only backups to Brady are currently Cassell and Gutierrez.
And now KO, who has better athleticism, size, speed, and upside than either of those guys.

I personally hope we never see this kid start, not because of his play though.

Rather, by the time I’d accept such an idea - he’d be at least 31 years old.

I think we'll see some KO action in the preseason. Of course if we see KO starting in the regular season that means that something has happened to Tom Brady. So... hopefully KO's regular season debut won't be for at least a few more years.

I still think it's too early to be starting a grooming project.

Maybe 3-4 years down the line? Sure.

To be honest I'd rather have an experienced veteran backing up Brady right now. If something were to ever happen, I wouldn’t want to be throwing in fresh meat.

I think KO will start #3 on the depth chart. Either Cassell or Gutierrez will be the second string guy. But I predict KO will quickly climb up, depending on how fast he can pick up the offense.

His youtube videos are phenomenal, and theres a whole lot of them thanks to aztecaction.com. I am looking forward to seeing him in preseason, but I believe by the end of the year he should be number 2. If that is the case, we may see him get some action at the end of the year when everything is set in stone. Tom Brady would certainly benefit from some rest near the end of the year to help nurse any injuries and to get fresh before the playoffs.

If KO impresses and Cassell looks good in camp we could see Cassell traded for a 5th or a 6th round pick next year, to a team which suffers an injury to its starter. Otherwise we could possibly see Cassell released - he is in the last year of his contract.

I think the guy with the easiest job in the world just lost it. Cassel the backup will be knocking on your door at the next census, clipboard still in hand. We SHOULD get a guy like Culpepper instead, maybe they are afraid if TB has a bad year or gets hurt Moss will lobby for Dante.....

Dont forget Young played in the USFL then on Tampa. I remember seeing him substitute for Montana the year before we drafted Drew and saying to anyone who would listen "we should trade the #1 pick for Young". Of course no one listened......

If we can get back a 5th round pick for Cassell, we are getting a return on the investment. I believe we only spent a 7th rounder on him. I think Cassell is hearing footsteps. Maybe this move is also meant to light a fire under the butts of our QBs, that there's somebody that can take their job if they don't step it up!

If you're lucky K.O. will be your Steve Young.

But if you don't want him I'll bet that there are a lot of people in San Diego who'd love to have him back in town playing four the Chargers in a couple years...

    We'll give you next year's #2 for him. ;)

Tom has AT LEAST five more years left. That'll outrun the length Kevin O'Connell's contract. The guy is going to be a backup, and that's that.

    Great pick!

I've always been a big fan of Ron Wolf and, as someone mentioned before, it is great when a team has the luxury to groom back-ups and move them later on for draft picks. Cassel is the back up now, Gutz is third string I believe and O'Connell is going to fight it out. At worst, the Pats have a back up rather than a 5'8" corner, right?

A team that has missed winning the SB by 1 play twice should be in the getting better business not in the growing qb's business. Besides, we arent very good at it......Davey, Kingsbury,Cassel, Guitierrez, Bishop sound familiar? Ya, I know, 1 out of 6 isnt that bad if the one is TB. I think its going to our heads though....

KO has got a ton of upside and athleticism. Instantly becomes the fastest QB on our roster. KO might outperform some QB's drafted ahead of him in this draft. The Pats obviously believed they were getting good value OR that Cassell wasn't going to cut it. Making sure you have a good young prospect with upside at the QB position is well worth it. Remember the year Brady was the 4th QB, and the Pats didn't cut him or try to get cute and send him to the practice squad? The move paid off, even though we had pro-bowler Bledsoe in front of him, didn't it?

The other way I think the Pats can get him involved is as the placeholder. KO could then be a versatile weapon for trick plays, because he can run for the first down with his feet, or be able to throw a pass equally.

Only Pats fans could look a gift horse in the mouth!

O'Connell the, "White Mike Vick?" No, he's bigger, stronger, and SMARTER. I've read (in more than one place) that K.O. had the highest Wonderlic score in the draft. Not among QB's - but in the whole draft! Michael Vick he is not. Vick threw a half season's worth of passes in his entire time in college, K.O. is a four year player who started 3 of those years (injuries kept him out a half season's worth), and played in a PASSING offense. He's thrown probably 10 times as many passes as Vick did.

But he IS nearly as mobile as Vick, so that comparison is fair.

But the best comparison really is Steve Young. K.O. is just taller and more athletic. Not a bad deal, eh? A guy who is equally good passing OR running.

But, again - if your GM wants to trade him next year I'd love to see him come home to San Diego (he IS a San Diego County native). Having him back up Rivers for a couple years before taking over would be just fine with me! :D

Right, I'm not arguing with you here that the kid doesn't have upside, I'm merely saying that he's a backup. Maybe he becomes a good backup, and that's a good thing to have, and certainly worth the investment of a late third on this team.
