Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his Wednesday press conference (10:50 a.m.) and one point he made was how the Bengals are a "turnover-driven" defense. While avoiding turnovers is key any week, it might have added importance Monday night. The Bengals' nine takeaways (5 interceptions; 4 fumble recoveries) lead the AFC and rank third in the NFL.
I think this is a stat to keep an eye on, but also tells a larger story. The Bengals D is giving up all these points, and their team is 1-2, despite the fact that they have forced the most turnovers in the AFC. That they have STILL managed to lose and give up a lot of points, even with that (self-realized) advantage, may say a lot about how BAD they are as much as the turnover numbers bespeak a defense that is more dangerous than their rep.
