Just out of curiosity, who are some of the top vet CBs available out there right now? With Scott on IR, it would be nice to bring another decent-ish guy in. For instance, where is Ray Mickens?

pacman jones

and if they could get him after the 10th week (if goodell doesn't suspend him the entire season or if he isn't sent to jail in vegas) and he can turn his life around , then NE truely is the king of chemistry

Yeah can't wait for pacman and his entourage strolling around the razor.

Mickens remains unsigned; otherwise, there's not a lot left now. Daylon McCutcheon may not play this year, due to knee surgery. DeJuan Groce, Robert Tate, Juran Bolden, and...?

I don't know why the FO didn't sign Lenny Walls. He is young, experienced, has size, and could play FS.

A better UFA bet might be to play Wilson, Meriweather, Andrews, et.al. at CB, and sign a UFA FS, where the talent pool hasn't yet dried completely.

I'm fine with adding Mickens, but we do have SIXTEEN defensive backs (plus Troy Brown) plenty for camp. We should carry 10-11 defensive backs on the 53. Let's call Samuel #11. Do we need additions, even without Samuel? I suspect not. We could theoretically go with as few as EIGHT defensive backs plus Troy Brown plus Eddie Jackson on PUP.

WHO ARE MY TEN (not counting Samuel or Troy Brown)
(WHO ARE YOURS?)

CORNERS - Hobbs, Gay, James
SAFETY - Harrison, Wilson, Sanders, Mitchell
NICKEL/SAFETY/ST - Meriweather, Andrews, Hawkins
PUP - Eddie Jackson
Practice Squad - Richardson, Anam, Williams
Cut - Baker

Hobbs, Gay, James, and maybe Asante - otherwise, you've got safeties trying corner. Out of that latter bunch, I only like Meriweather. We do have plenty of DB's in camp, but I think far too few corners.

i agree. there's not much out there for cb's...but what about troy vincent? from what i can find, he hasnt officially retired...but i think your right about cb's, we're ok. though, i say that every year, and every year, their all injured by playoff time...hopefully not this year!!

"Trying corner" may be difficult, playing nickel is not. Hawkins is fine at nickel, as are probably a couple of the others.

I think Meriweather is going to play CB this year and will make a lot of plays as a nickel CB coverng the slot receivers. He has decent size, speed and some quick twitch ability. He is more than willing in the physical department.
The reads in the Pats defense for the CB appear to be much less than those that the safties have to learn. Also minimal calls required of the CB's.
If Meriweather possesses that second gear for maximim recovery speed, he could be very special at CB.
