Can anyone explain why Dallas went for a field goal when they were down 14 points with less than 10 minutes to play? I do not see the logic in it, what does it buy them?

It was a bad move in my opinion. Wade Phillips (Dallas HC) said that he went for the field goal because he didn't have a play he thought they could score on.

IMO kicking that field goal conceded the game.

Pretty much because Wade Phillips is their HC. You can pretty much throw all logic out the window.

As was said during the game, even if they failed to convert/score you've got the Pats backed up deep in their own zone. Instead they gave them some comfort room after the kickoff.

Instead of being down 2 touchdowns if they went for it on 4th. The kick a field goal, then are down only 11, so a fieldgoal and touchdown + 2 pt. conversion. Whats more likely in their minds? Scoring 2 tds in 10 mins, or scoring a FG and a TD.

Here's the problem with that logic. You not only need a touch down and a field goal, but also the two point conversion. A two point conversion is from the two and a half yard line. One play. The situation they had was fourth and goal from the 4 and a half.

It's basically the same play. If you don't have a play you have confidence in to score from the 5 yard line, what makes you think you're going to convert the 2 point conversion? Sure, a fourth and goal from the five is longer than a two point conversion, but not that much longer. Basically, the "reward" for those extra two yards if 4 points.

Stupid call. If the field goal would have put them down only 10 it's a totally different analysis. Have to go for it there. Particularly given how the Patriots offense was playing.

the logic is they needed 3 scores to win but they should have been playing for ot then. they obviously were not planing on our long drrive following.
