when i wake up tomorrow, peppers better be a patriot or move on.

cant handle the stress that comes with the waiting game :D

i hear ya but patience is a virtue!!

It doesn't really say anything new. They talk about compensation, but minimize the fact that he will cost them almost 18 million if they keep him (edited because it was too early for me to read). Which, basically, keeps them from doing anything at all in free agency. Just like with Cassell, you have to look at not only how good a player is, but how much he will cost you to keep him, when trying to come up with his trade value. Add to that the fact that he has stated he doesn't want to play for Carolina, and will veto any trade to any team except for one of four he has mentioned and he has really hurt his trade value immensely.

If I was a Carolina fan I would want this thing done immediately so I could get on with the off season while there is still an off season left. Of course it doesn't mean any of this will happen, people make stupid decisions all the time.

Huh??? The article does mention the impact of Pepper's cap number
"While there's certainly a benefit to the Panthers realizing $16.7 million worth of immediate salary cap space they'd obtain if they traded him"

The term Elephant was a 49er thing. LT wasn't an "Elephant" and neither was Dent. It's a 4-3 term for a pass rusher they mover around (DE). LT was a 3-4 OLB and Dent was a DE in the 46.

You may have heard it misused by a sportscaster, but I don't recall it from the 80's. It became popular with Haley.

Six games into the 1981 season, 49ers coach Bill Walsh sensed his defense needed a serious boost. He traded two draft picks to the Chargers for Dean, sat down with his new player and told him the plan:

Dean would not be in on every down. He would not play every snap. Instead, he would be a standup defensive end, a pass-rushing specialist - a radical idea in an era where defenses had only begun adjusting to the notion of a nickel cornerback in passing situations.
Dean's identity as the NFL's first "elephant" pass rusher later influenced pass-rushing standouts such as Charles Haley, who won five Super Bowls with the 49ers and Cowboys, and Eagles edge rusher Jevon Kearse.

HALL OF FAME / 49ers' Dean is headed to Hall of Fame

Peppers isn't coming here to take on double teams, that's for sure.

well that one of the things i was concerned about peppers. he says he wants to play 3-4 OLB etc etc. its well known that BB follows the "i coach, you play" attitude and isnt going to cater to what peppers wishes or anyone wishes wrt to schemes. So does that mean if BB gets him and asks him to be a DE in 4-3 situations he wont be too happy ?

If he's getting paid and winning, it probably won't be a big deal.

He won't ask him, that's not what he does well. He'll be a pass rushing specialist, whether he plays traditional OLB or not, he'll be there to rush the passer first period. He'll be on the line some in the 4-3 whether he lines up their or shifts.

Our 3-4 ends translate to a tackle in the 4-3, it's simply not the same position, body type, responsibilities.

You might notice seymour is listed as a tackle on some past pro bowl ballots (maybe all). That's where he'd play in a 4-3, while Peppers is a true 4-3 end, which translates to a LB or pass rush specialist in the 3-4.

Anyone wonder if Seymore will ne released if this is done to make cap room ?

I would like us to sign Peppers for the additional condiment factor.
Mayo and Peppers is tough to top.
Maybe we can draft a Mustard or Ketchup........

Now that Vrabel's gone and assuming that Peppers is coming to NE, I can imagine him being a TE on goal line situations! He was a pretty good basketball player in college and is 6 foot 7 too! Very Gates like, but honestly, I've never seen him catch a football.

I believe Carolina has used him somewhat as a TE in those situations. According to Belichick he could probably play 6 or 7 positions.

i don't know about all of this according to the cap page we only have about 7 mill in cap left... thats not including the recent resignings and galloway

if the news about peppers is just a ploy by the panthers to get his value up...and the pats are not really interested....then i would think the Pats would deny any interest.

if i were the panthers i would have used another team..perhaps the broncos or lions, whose management is not so strong or in turmoil. even if they denied it..it wouldnt mean much.

Buzzkill article.

LOL You can't kill the buzz in a 48 page patsfans thread with something as simple as a denial...

Sounds like someone is trying to light a fire under the market Peppers himself limited by suggesting the evil BB might be nabbing him on the cheap... Might even be BB tweeking his critics with the possibility he might be about to acquire Julius Peppers for the paltry second round pick he settled for for Cassel...Or it could be just an attempt to boost the web hits at NFL.com through the post FA pre draft doldrums.

And while Bill says we can afford anyone we want, not sure how many cuts the caveat would entail. There aren't enough restructure opportunities available under this expiring CBA to accommodate a double digit signing.

Wasn't Vic also the first (and lone voice) to predict a NE run at Peppers?? This reminds me a little of Curren and the knee hysteria...

Once our Mayo and Peppers are mustard, no other team can ketchup!

Why would they...if they aren't interested they would want his value to go through the roof so some other spooked team absorbs that...

This isn't emanating from the Panthers. It's emanating from the Peppers camp. His agent is likely not thrilled with his client spouting off about limited lists of teams, particularly if none of them is showing serious interest heading into week 3 of FA and one of them has spent it's recently freed up double digit cap on numerous signings in the last two weeks leading the rest to conclude NE is out of the running. I'm sure he's telling teams there's lots of interest and maybe even a deal in the works and they better step up before it's too late. One of those teams could even be Vic's source, using Vic to float a trial balloon to gauge if there really is any interest from NE. Carolina's GM seems to have shot down the NE on the verge prediction, but those who want to believe will just discount that as gamesmanship...

Spin, rinse, repeat.
